Big 12 and Texas Signing Day Capsules: QB Gilbert headlines another top class for 'Horns
Comments 0AUSTIN - Garrett Gilbert took most of the drama out of the latest Texas recruiting class a year ago. The 6-foot-4 high school All-American quarterback committed to the Longhorns the day after the 2008 signing day.
Other top players quickly followed.
On Wednesday, the heir-apparent to Colt McCoy made it official when he signed his letter of intent to headline another bumper crop of recruits headed to Austin. Gilbert was the Parade Magazine and Gatorade national player of the year.
"Garrett's wanted to come here since he was in the 10th grade," Longhorns coach Mack Brown said. "He was the lead dog in the class. When he decided he wanted to come here, a lot of the big dogs in the state wanted to come. ... He was one of the first scholarships in here this morning."
The Longhorns signed 20 players Wednesday in class rated among the best in the country by national recruiting analysts. Rivals.com rated the Texas class No. 5 in the country. Scout.com ranked it No. 6. Thirteen players were named to prep All-American teams.
"They got dynamic playmakers on both sides of the football," said Jeremy Crabtree, a Big 12 and national recruiting analyst for Rivals. "Gilbert is the best quarterback to come out of the Lone Star State in recent history."
Brown steps back from declarations of where the class stands nationally.
"Our evaluation of a recruiting class is four years from now, not from today," Brown said. "They all have the ability to play and to win all the games. It's up to us to coach them to the best of their ability."
Gilbert is just the latest big-name quarterback recruit to sign with Texas but the first in a few years. Chris Simms was the big name in 1999. In 2002, it was Vince Young, who led the Longhorns to the 2005 national championship.
McCoy was not considered among the best QBs in the 2005 signing class and was considered a safety valve when Texas missed on other quarterbacks. He has since set a Texas record with 32 career victories and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting last season. He will be a senior next season.
Gilbert set a Texas state high school record with 12,534 career passing yards in leading Lake Travis to consecutive Class 4A championships the past two seasons. He is the son for former NFL quarterback Gale Gilbert.
"He's so well taught because of his dad," Brown said.
Whether he will redshirt or could see playing time behind McCoy next season has not been determined, Brown said. Texas has two other quarterbacks, John Chiles and Sherrod Harris, on the roster.
Texas also signed the big running back they lacked last season in Chris Whaley of Madisonville. Whaley (6-3, 235 pounds) rushed for 6,174 yards and 79 touchdowns in high school. He was the only running back Texas tried to sign, Brown said.
The Longhorns also filled a key need on the defensive line, where Texas will lose three starters, including All-American Brian Orakpo. They signed six ends and tackles, and some might contribute early. Pflugerville defensive end Alex Okafor (6-4, 240 pounds) is considered the top player in the bunch and will be counted on to fill in for Orakpo.
As usual, almost of the players come from Texas. Only one, defensive lineman Derek Johnson of Hoxie, Ark., is from outside the state.
"We want to make sure we win at home," Brown said. "We're doing OK with in-state guys. We could have won the national championship last year with what we have."
Eight of the signees have already enrolled in classes and will participate in spring drills. Another athlete, Marquise Goodwin of Garland Rowlett, signed a track scholarship Wednesday but could play football in the fall.
A&M inks 28 recruits for 2009 class
COLLEGE STATION - One of Mike Sherman's first mandates for his staff when he became Texas A&M's coach in November 2007 was to start evaluating the nation's high school juniors.
Sherman unveiled the results of their labors on Wednesday, the first day of the national signing period, announcing a list of 28 recruits for the 2009 season. The class includes 16 defensive players, 11 offensive players and a punter. Sherman lured the entire class from two states - 25 from Texas and three from Louisiana.
The Aggies went 4-8 in Sherman's first season and need help across the board. They finished 11th in the Big 12 in both total offense (341 yards per game) and total defense (462 yards per game) in 2008.
"We've been recruiting these kids for a long time, and it's nice to get to this point," Sherman said. "To measure it with a crystal ball, where we're going to be with this class, I don't know. But I think we'll be fun to watch and I think we'll have to accept the fact that some of these kids are going to be thrown into the fire."
The gem of the class is Christine Michael, a 5-foot-11, 202-pound running back from Beaumont. Michael was rated as the nation's No. 4 running back by Rivals.com and was named an All-American by SuperPrep, a recruiting magazine.
Sherman envisions Michael making an instant impact, like freshman Cyrus Gray did for the Aggies last season. Gray was A&M's second-leading rusher, behind Mike Goodson, but also returned kickoffs and led the Aggies with 133 all-purpose yards per game.
"I expect no more from him than anybody else," Sherman said. "But he is someone that has tremendous talent. The versatility he has - he is very quick, he can accelerate, he can make a big play, he can catch the ball very well out of the backfield. We will accelerate the learning curve for him."
The Aggies ranked last in the Big 12 in rushing, averaging only 88.5 yards per game, and Goodson left a year early to test the NFL draft. A&M had 85 plays for more than 20 yards last season, but only five on rushing plays, a stat that Sherman says must improve.
"We need more explosive plays," Sherman said. "That player (Michael) can get that for us."
Sherman also expects big things from Uzoma Nwachukwu, a 6-foot receiver from Allen, the reigning Division I, 5-A champion. The receiving corps turned out to be one of the bright spots for A&M last season, with freshmen Jeff Fuller and Ryan Tannehill combining for 105 catches and 14 touchdowns.
Sherman said he watched Nwachukwu closely during last year's playoffs and was impressed with his work ethic.
"I loved the way he practiced," Sherman said. "He's going to be a big contributor. He knows how to run routes as well. He's very powerful in his lower body and he's an extremely quick-footed athlete. I don't know how fast downfield, but he has some quickness in his size and can do some special things."
The class includes 12 defensive backs and linebackers, areas of weakness for A&M in recent years. Sherman sought players who fit the mold of A&M's "Wrecking Crew" defenses from the early 1990s, when Sherman was an A&M assistant under R.C. Slocum.
"The model is much like the model we've had in the past," Sherman said. "We really went after speed. I told our coaches from the outset, when we took off on recruiting - ‘We can make some mistakes, but we can't make mistakes on their character. We can't make mistakes on speed. We can't make mistakes on their desire to be at Texas A&M.' I think we were able to hit on those fronts."
The class does not include a scholarship quarterback. Sherman said A&M was in the running for a few, but probably failed to nab one because of the current depth at the position.
Jerrod Johnson appeared in all 12 games as a sophomore in 2008 and is the likely starter for the next two seasons. Tannehill, a redshirt freshman, may move back to quarterback - which he came to A&M to play - after Sherman moved him to receiver last season. And Tommy Dorman is still in the mix after redshirting in 2008.
"It is a high priority now, as we enter our junior recruiting (for 2010)," Sherman said. "We did go after a couple of guys early in the recruiting process. Because of the success Jerrod Johnson and Ryan Tannehill had, and their future, and being as young as they were this season, I think some players felt like they didn't want to stack themselves up in that situation."
The class also includes punter Ryan Epperson, from Keller, the brother of Baylor punter Derek Epperson. Sherman hopes Ryan, also a high-school soccer player, can fill the void left by outgoing senior Justin Brantly, the Big 12's leading punter in 2008.
"I thought this was a situation we had to address," Sherman said. "I don't want to be stuck, through the course of the season, without a punter. They (punters) can be a little bit of an afterthought until you don't have one. I didn't want it to be an afterthought."
Sherman also announced commitments from eight walk-ons - quarterback Patrick O'Quinn, linebacker Kody Johnston, defensive linemen Wells Childress and Ryan Koch, offensive lineman Mitchell Crouch, tight end James Pearson, kicker Kyle Serres and athlete Grant Gunderson.
Texas Tech builds off remarkable 2008 season
LUBBOCK - Texas Tech coach Mike Leach said Wednesday his 10th recruiting class on the West Texas plains was his best. He's pretty sure a remarkable 2008 season had something to do with it.
The Red Raiders rose to No. 2 in the national rankings, the highest they've ever been. They got there with one of the plays of the year in college football - Michael Crabtree's last-second touchdown catch to beat No. 1 Texas. That dramatic win and several other games were seen nationally in prime time.
"It's hard to gauge, but I guess when you call somebody, they're quicker to come to the phone," Leach said. "There was just a lot of positive attention our university was able to have this year that drew a lot of people in. When we brought them to the games, we were able to get a lot of them rallied around us."
The results showed on national signing day, with 15 of the 25 who signed letters of intent coming in what Leach saw as the biggest areas of need: offensive and defensive lines and secondary.
Among the notable defensive tackles were a pair of out-of-state recruits: Pearlie Graves of Tulsa, Okla., and Romario Cathey of Nashville, Tenn. The 6-foot-3, 260-pound Graves might have been the biggest coup. The No. 6 prospect in Oklahoma on Rivals.com's list was recruited by Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
"He personifies a defensive tackle," Leach said. "He's aggressive and physical."
The Red Raiders lost all four safeties on the depth chart, so they could be looking for immediate help from the likes of Terrance Bullitt of Garland Naaman Forest, Daniel Cobb of Killeen Ellison and Will Ford of Abilene Cooper.
Bullitt's brother, Melvin, had four interceptions in his second season with the Indianapolis Colts after playing at Texas A&M.
"What I like about him is he's a big, tall guy that can run," Leach said. "A lot of these guys are rangier guys."
After losing Crabtree to the NFL following his sophomore season, Texas Tech found someone with an identical pedigree. Jarvis Phillips was recruited as an athlete after playing quarterback at Dallas Carter, just as Crabtree was before scoring 41 touchdowns in two seasons and twice winning the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver.
Of course, the Red Raiders signed plenty of receivers, too. They always do. The biggest name among the four was the only recruit to enroll at Texas Tech in January: Eric Ward of Wichita Falls Rider. He had 1,063 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior.
Leach also grabbed the type of all-purpose running back he wants for his pass-happy scheme. Eric Stephens had three 1,000-yard seasons at Mansfield Timberview and was the No. 6 all-purpose back nationally, according to Rivals.
Graham Harrell is gone after becoming the only quarterback in NCAA history with two 5,000-yard seasons. His replacement is probably already on campus - sophomore Taylor Potts of Abilene was his backup last year - but the Red Raiders added a quarterback in Jacob Karam of Friendswood. Karam threw for 3,291 yards and 38 touchdowns as a senior.
Baylor goes heavy on OL for Briles' 2nd class
WACO - The bulk of Baylor's latest signing class has designs on protecting standout quarterback Robert Griffin.
Coach Art Briles introduced a class of 28 players Wednesday, the first day of the national signing period. The group includes six offensive linemen, more than any other position, and five already weigh more than 300 pounds.
"The O-line class we signed, they can all play," Briles said.
Those linemen join 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive tackle Danny Watkins, a Canadian who transferred from a California junior college and is already enrolled at Baylor. Watkins will go through spring practice.
Baylor lost starting tackles Jason Smith and Dan Gay to graduation after both started at least 34 games. Smith is a projected top-five pick for the NFL draft in April. The three returning starters are rising seniors with only one season remaining.
Briles expects sophomore guard Philip Blake, a transfer from Tyler Junior College, to compete for a starting job. And 6-foot-7 tackle Marquis Franklin is transferring from Blinn College.
All but three players in Briles' second signing class are from Texas. All 24 incoming freshman, including four offensive linemen, played at Texas high schools.
"We have some good football players from across the board and we filled all the needs we felt needed to be filled," Briles said. "We are extremely pumped about this class."
Griffin, who doesn't even turn 19 until next week, graduated high school early and enrolled at Baylor last spring. He made his debut in the season opener and started the final 11 games of his freshman season.
While the Bears (4-8) had their 13th consecutive losing season, three of the losses in Briles' first season were by a touchdown or less against Top 25 teams.
"Our 2008 football team allowed us to have a good recruiting season," Briles said. "Without a doubt, it created momentum that carried over off the field, where the image of Baylor football is good across the country. ... We feel great about the direction of our football program."
Besides the linemen to protect Griffin, the Bears signed four receivers, two running backs, a tight end and three high school quarterbacks who likely will play different positions at Baylor - at least initially.
The 12 defensive additions were four linemen, three linebackers and five backs.
"We've stepped it up. We're looking for men because we're playing in the Big 12 and it's a man's league," Briles said. "And they have to be people that dominate on the football field and we were very blessed to get these guys on campus."
Sooners sign 20 players, including Oklahoma State commit
NORMAN, Okla. - A cornerback who decommitted from rival Oklahoma State at the last minute is among 20 players who have signed letters of intent to play for Oklahoma on college football's signing day.
Demontre Hurst of Lancaster, Texas, had originally given a verbal commitment to play for Oklahoma State, but instead it was the Sooners who received his letter of intent Wednesday.
Hurst joins a recruiting class that leans more heavily toward defense after Oklahoma put up huge offensive numbers last season on its way to a loss in the BCS championship game against Florida. Led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Sam Bradford, the Sooners became the first team since 1919 to score at least 60 points in five straight games.
Fourteen of the first 22 recruits to sign with Oklahoma on Wednesday morning were defensive players.
Other signees included defensive tackle Jamarkus McFarland, who made waves by committing to Oklahoma over Texas and then providing a lurid tale of his recruiting process. He later recanted part of the story, saying he had exaggerated.
Five recruits enrolled in school early and were already on campus, including quarterback Drew Allen of San Antonio and three linebackers.
The Sooners also signed receivers Cameron Kenny and Jaz Reynolds to help replenish a position where they will lose seniors Juaquin Iglesias, Manuel Johnson and Quentin Chaney.
Gundy: OSU's on-field success good for recruiting
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's success on the field this past season translated into a recruiting class that should meet most of the Cowboys' needs, coach Mike Gundy said Wednesday.
The Cowboys, coming off a 9-4 season and a No. 16 finish in the final Associated Press poll, signed 23 players. That number included four defensive backs and three running backs, one of which was rated among the top 15 players in the talent-rich state of Texas.
Included in the class were seven players from Oklahoma, some of whom chose Oklahoma State over more tradition-rich programs. Three players from Georgia also signed after the Cowboys made a push into another fertile recruiting area.
Gundy attributed that success to Oklahoma State's strong 2008 season, the university's new football facilities - including a renovated Boone Pickens Stadium - and an early start to recruiting this year's class.
"We are very excited about signing a big number for us in Oklahoma. We feel like the high school football in the state of Oklahoma was very good," Gundy said. "The number of players we were able to recruit ... made us very happy as a coaching staff.
"I think they'll mold into our current team."
Gundy used the example of linebacker Jordan Barnes as an example of the Cowboys' new national identity. Barnes, from Fort Wayne, Ind., contacted Oklahoma State coaches midway through last season after watching the Cowboys on television. Oklahoma State coaches, who don't normally recruit in Indiana, looked into Barnes' potential and decided he fit into their program.
"When you stay ranked in the Top 25, and you're on the ESPN scroll and you're on national TV a lot, people see you," Gundy said. "That exposure is worth a lot of money. It's worth a lot to your future in recruiting and even enrollment in the university."
Among in-state players, 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back Daytawion Lowe of Carl Albert High School in Midwest City is arguably the Cowboys' marquee freshman recruit. Lowe recorded more than 100 tackles for the perennially powerful Titans during each of the last three seasons, never missing a play. Seven Big 12 Conference schools offered Lowe a scholarship.
Lowe joined Andrae May of Houston, Joe Mitchell of Katy, Texas, and Mississippi junior-college transfer Andrew McGee as the Cowboys' defensive back recruits. The Cowboys did lose out on one other defensive back prospect, as Demontre Hurst of Lancaster, Texas, who had orally committed to Oklahoma State, instead signed with Oklahoma.
A program already stocked with tailbacks signed two more in Dexter Pratt of Navasota, Texas, and Jeremy Smith, who starred as Tulsa Union won last season's Class 6A prep title. Smith rushed for 242 yards and scored three touchdowns in Union's 34-20 win over Jenks in the championship game.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Pratt originally had orally committed to Louisiana State, but reversed course in mid-January and decided to attend Oklahoma State, where he is already enrolled. Rivals.com rated him as the nation's fourth-best running back prospect and the 15th-best overall prospect in Texas, regardless of position.
Gundy said he thinks Pratt could add 10 to 15 pounds before the season starts and could contribute immediately, even with a logjam at the position that will include third-team All-American Kendall Hunter, Keith Toston and Beau Johnson.
Fullback David Paulsen of Marietta, Ga., also will join the Cowboys' crowded backfield. He is one of three Georgians to sign with the Cowboys, joining linebacker LeRon Furr of Columbus and defensive lineman Ryan Robinson of Buford. Gundy said assistant coaches Glenn Spencer and Robert Matthews - who played for Georgia Tech and Georgia, respectively - successfully used their connections in the Peach State.
"We decided to go into the Atlanta area and the suburbs and take a swing," Gundy said. "...We are very excited about being able to get out in that part of the country."
Oklahoma State signed one quarterback, Clint Chelf of Enid, who passed for more than 2,200 yards and rushed for more than 700 yards as a senior, accounting for 31 touchdowns. Gundy said it's likely that Chelf will redshirt next season, when incumbent starter Zac Robinson is slated to return for his senior season.
Gundy said the Cowboys' four juco signees - McGee, defensive end Darius Hart, defensive tackle Horace Hubbard and 6-foot-4, 320-pound offensive lineman Anthony Morgan - will be expected to "factor in early in their career."
