NFL Moves - NFC: Packers bring back Brohm to practice squad

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

MILWAUKEE — One day after being cut, quarterback Brian Brohm was back with the Green Bay Packers.

And while Packers general manager Ted Thompson knows this isn't exactly the way Brohm expected his NFL career to go, Thompson insists the former Louisville star can still become a productive player in the pros.

"We haven't given up on him, and we don't think he's given up, either," Thompson told reporters in Green Bay on Sunday.

Brohm was one of eight players signed to the team's practice squad Sunday.

Also among the team's signings were wide receiver Jake Allen, cornerback Trevor Ford, linebacker Cyril Obiozor, running back Kregg Lumpkin, tackle Jamon Meredith, defensive end Ronald Talley and nose tackle Anthony Toribio.

Brohm was considered a potential NFL star in college but has struggled after slipping to the Packers in the second round of last year's draft.

Matt Flynn, an unheralded seventh-round pick last year, beat out Brohm to become Aaron Rodgers' primary backup. Despite a nagging shoulder injury to Flynn, Brohm didn't play nearly well enough to challenge for the main backup job this year.

Thompson downplayed the idea that Green Bay might be looking to sign an experienced No. 3 quarterback, meaning Brohm likely would remain next in line behind Flynn if something were to happen to Rodgers.

Thompson also says the Packers aren't giving up on oft-injured former first-round draft pick Justin Harrell, one of four players the team placed on injured reserve Saturday.

"Nobody's given up on anybody," Thompson said. "The Packers haven't given up on him and he hasn't given up on the Packers, so we'll go forward."

Thompson said Harrell will undergo six to 10 months of "intense" rehabilitation and workout programs designed to build his core strength to make it less likely the injury will flare back up.

Thompson also sought to quell fans' anger at Harrell, who has played in only 13 regular season games, plus two playoff games, since the Packers took him in the first round of the 2007 draft.

"Nothing that's happened has been Justin's fault," Thompson said. "He's not a bad guy. He's trying his best, but we have these medical things that have come up, so we're going to try to get past that."

Thompson said the team faced tough decisions in making their final roster cuts Saturday. Among the most difficult was releasing popular wide receiver Ruvell Martin instead of Brett Swain, who is seen as a better special teams player.

"There were some really painful moments over the weekend, and that was clearly one of the more painful ones," Thompson said. "Ruvell was everything you asked of in a Packer. He's a good player, he's a great person, a great teammate, well-respected by his peers. At the same time we felt that Brett had earned a spot on the team."

Panthers claim Sutton, Harris to fill roster

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have claimed running back Tyrell Sutton off waivers from the Green Bay Packers and defensive tackle Ra'Shon Harris from the Pittsburgh Steelers to fill out their 53-man roster.

The moves were announced Sunday. The Panthers are expected to make a couple more moves after trimming their roster to 51 on Saturday.

The 5-foot-8 Sutton, who was among the Packers' final cuts Saturday, signed with Green Bay after going undrafted out of Northwestern. He was the school's second-leading rusher with 3,886 yards, and was second in career all-purpose yards with 5,138.

Sutton ran for 191 yards in the preseason, averaging 4.8 yards with one touchdown. He also returned five kickoffs for a 24.4 yard average, and the Panthers could be looking at him as a punt returner, an that's an area of concern heading into the season.

Kenny Moore and Captain Munnerlyn both struggled fielding punts during the preseason.

Sutton also gives the Panthers some depth at running back if Jonathan Stewart isn't ready for the season opener. Stewart has been bothered by a sore Achilles' and hasn't practiced since Aug. 11, although he said last week he plans to be ready for Philadelphia on Sept. 13.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Harris was a sixth-round draft choice of the Steelers last year after a college career at Oregon. He started all 13 games for the Ducks as a senior and led interior linemen in tackles for a loss.

Bucs claim 2 off waivers; fill out practice squad

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers claimed defensive end Maurice Evans and cornerback William Middleton off waivers and re-signed seven players who were with the team during training camp to the practice squad.

Cornerback Kyle Arrington, receiver Patrick Carter, defensive tackle Rashaad Duncan, running back Kareem Huggins, tackle James Lee, tight end Ryan Purvis and receiver Mario Urrutia were signed to the practice squad. All of the players had been released by the Bucs on Saturday.

The 13-year veteran has started 196 of 202 career games. He will team with veteran Deon Grant and new cornerback Ken Lucas in Seattle's revamped secondary.

The Seahawks finished last in the league in pass defense in 2008.

Seattle also claimed tackle Brandon Frye off waivers from Miami. Frye played seven games for the Dolphins last season. He entered the league in 2007 with Houston.

The Seahawks waived tackle Kyle Williams to make room on the 53-man roster for Frye.

The team said it will set its eight-man practice squad on Monday.

Vikings sign Booty to practice squad

The Vikings announced the practice squad on Sunday. The others are running back Ian Johnson, tight end Garrett Mills, offensive tackles Chris Clark and Drew Radovich, receiver Nick Moore, defensive tackle Tremaine Johnson and safety Colt Anderson.

Booty was the team's third-string quarterback last season. But he lost out on a spot on the active roster when the Vikings signed Brett Favre to be the starter. Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels will be the backups.

The Vikings also announced they have waived center Jon Cooper, an undrafted rookie. They signed Kory Lichtensteiger to take his place.

Falcons add former Jaguars CB Brian Williams

Williams, a fourth-round pick by Minnesota in 2002, played four seasons with the Vikings before spending three seasons with the Jaguars.

Also selected to the practice squad on Sunday were offensive linemen Jose Valdez and Michael Butterworth, linebacker Robert James, receiver Troy Bergeron and cornerback Glenn Sharpe.

Rookie John Parker Wilson of Alabama is left as the No. 3 quarterback behind Matt Ryan and Chris Redman.

Saints add QB Chase Daniel to their practice squad

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Saints have added rookie quarterback Chase Daniel to the team's practice squad.

The Saints also announced Sunday the team signed seven other players to the practice squad, including two 2008 draft choices — wide receiver Adrian Arrington and defensive tackle DeMario Pressley.

Daniel, an undrafted rookie from Missouri, signed with the Washington Redskins in April. But he but was waived Saturday during the Redskins' final preseason cuts.

The other players signed to the Saints' practice squad on Sunday include running back P.J. Hill, guard Tim Duckworth, wide receiver Matt Simon, cornerback Danny Gorrer and tackle Jermey Parnell.

CORRECTION

CHICAGO — In a Sept. 5 story about the Chicago Bears' roster moves, The Associated Press erroneously reported that receiver Brandon Rideau failed to make the season-opening roster for the fourth straight year. This was the third straight year he did not make the roster.
