Moya, Macdonald lead Scorpions to 6-1 victory over Jaguars

Julian Moya struck out 10 batters in six innings and Ryan Macdonald drove in five runs to lead the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College to a 6-1 victory over the University of Houston-Victoria after seven innings Friday at Scorpion Field.

The Scorpions (2-7) and Jaguars (4-5) finish the three-game series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Scorpion Field.

"It feels great to get a good win," Scorpions coach Bryan Aughney. "That's why we are competing every day, to get that 'W' so it real feels good."

Moya pitched six innings, allowing no earned runs, four hits and six walks. The Jaguars stranded eight baserunners during those six innings.

Macdonald, a left-handed junior outfielder, provided the big bat for the Scorpions, driving in five runs with a two-run single in the first inning, a two-run triple in the third inning and an opposite-field solo homer in the eighth.

"Ryan is definitely an offensive force," Aughney said. "He did a good job rounding runs when we needed to. Every day somebody has to step up and today was his day."

The Scorpions scored two runs in the first when Jorge Camorlinga walked and Peter Maldonado doubled before Macdonald's single for a 2-0 lead. In the third, Walter Blume was hit by pitch and Camorlinga singled before Macdonald's triple to deep right-center.

Through the first four innings, the Scorpions had scored five runs without leaving a baserunner aboard. They finished with seven hits and left only three baserunners aboard.

Jesus Mendoza pitched three scoreless and hitless innings in relief for the Scorpions, striking out three and walking only one.

UHV left 10 runners on base. The Scorpions made five errors, but solid pitching by Moya and Mendoza got the Scorpions out of trouble.
