Scorpions prevail 2-0 in men's soccer

The Brownsville Herald

The University of Texas at Brownsville-Texas Southmost College men's soccer team cleared an important conference hurdle by beating Texas Wesleyan 2-0 on Wednesday at Morningside Park.

The Scorpions women weren't quite as fortunate, losing 2-1 to Wesleyan.

The UTB-TSC men (7-4, 3-0 Red River Athletic Conference) tallied a pair of goals in the first nine minutes and held on to improve to 5-0 at home this season.

The Scorpions failed to convert a second-half penalty kick.

"We've been talking about it for a while because we haven't been scoring early in our games, so two goals in the first 10 minutes was great," UTB-TSC men's soccer coach Dan Balaguero said. "Two-nil - I know it could have been better, but (at least) we didn't have any lapses to let them back in it."

In the sixth minute, Darren O'Connor scored on a beautiful free kick from the left side that curved around the wall and caught the right corner of the net. Dave Purser scored from close range in a crowd in the ninth minute to make it 2-0.

In the women's match, Diana Lopez tapped the ball into the right corner of the net in the 32nd minute for a 1-0 Wesleyan lead. The Scorpions' Verena Wonsikowski tied it on a goal from 8 yards in the 56th minute.

Brianna McKernon won it for Wesleyan (6-4, 3-0) on a free kick from 25 yards in the 81st minute. The UTB-TSC women (4-4-1, 2-1) are now 3-1-1 at home this season.

The Scorpions next play their final home matches Oct. 16 against Bacone College.
