RGV Capsules: Monterrey, Pachuca to play in McAllen
McALLEN — A Mexican Soccer League exhibition between Monterrey and Pachuca of the Primera Division is set to start at 9 tonight at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The teams were originally scheduled to play in July, but the match was postponed because of effects of Hurricane Alex in Mexico. So the match was moved to today.
Tournament organizer, Ignacio Larraga, said that both teams are expected to bring their top stars for today’s match. Pachuca’s roster includes forward Herculez Gomez and midfielder Jose Torres. Both played for the United States in the 2010 World Cup. Torres is a Texas native who hails from Longview. Monterrey has forward Humberto Suazo, who also played in the World Cup for Chile.
“I feel good that it’s going to happen,” Larraga said. “I think it’s going to be good for the community.”
A match between semi-pro teams from Reynosa and McAllen will serve as a prelude beginning at 6 p.m. La Faraona from Reynosa and La Juve from McAllen are the finalists of the Suenos y Talentos tournament that began in July. That final was originally supposed to be held before the exhibition before it was postponed. Pachuca and Monterrey will award the winner of the match $10,000, Larraga said.
Tickets will go on sale at noon today at the stadium’s ticket office. General admission tickets are $20, reserved $45 and VIP $60.
