The biggest boxing event in the Rio Grande Valley during the past week was last Thursday’s press conference at McAllen Municipal Auditorium to promote the April 20 super welterweight world title unification fight in San Antonio between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (WBC champion, 41-0-1, 30 knockouts) and Austin Trout (WBA champion, 26-0, 14 KOs).
It attracted more than 1,000 exuberant fans, who turned out to show their support for Alvarez, a native of Jalisco, Mexico.
“I feel a big responsibility to do my best and win for you (fans),” Alvarez told a lively, cheering audience.
The crowd also was thrilled to hear the announcement that there would be 10,000 tickets on sale for only $10 each for the show at the Alamodome.
Weslaco light welterweight Omar “Panterita” Figueroa (20-0-1, 16 KOs) will be featured on the undercard and take on Abner Cotto (16-0, seven KOs), the cousin of Miguel Cotto, in a scheduled 12-round fight.
Even though “Panterita” wasn’t present at Thursday’s press conference because he is training in California, Omar Figueroa Sr., the Weslaco fighter’s father and manager, was on hand along with Omar’s younger brother, Brandon.
“He comes from a boxing family, so we know he’ll be tough,” Figueroa Sr. said of Abner Cotto. “It might be Omar’s toughest fight. We can’t take him lightly.”
“Panterita” is coming off a decisive win March 2 in San Antonio, where he knocked out Colombian Henry Aurad just 47 seconds into the first round.
The April 20 show is being presented by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and will air on Showtime. For ticket information, call (210) 979-3302.
