UTB-TSC Capsules: Volleyball championship celebration planned Jan. 20

University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College fans are invited to celebrate with the NAIA 2011 volleyball national champions at a celebration event at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium.

The celebration will feature members of the 2011 Scorpions, who captured the NAIA crown Dec. 3 in Sioux City, Iowa. Special presentations include a performance by the UTB-TSC Drumline, which provided entertainment during home volleyball matches, and by UTB-TSC student Nestor AnDress Trevino, brother of Anayeli Trevino. A video tribute featuring highlights of the national championship also will be shown.

During the 2011 season, UTB-TSC won its third straight Red River Athletic Conference championship and advanced to the national tournament for the third straight year. The Scorpions advanced to the national quarterfinals in 2009 and the semifinals in 2010 before winning it all in 2011.

The Scorpions, who went 32-2 for the season, had four players named to the Tachikara NAIA all-america team. Ana Guerra was named to the first team, Danica Markovic to the second team and Amber Brooks and Paula Barros were honorable mention.

Free hot dogs and refreshments will be served.
