Horse Racing Capsules: Jockey Borel to return to Oaklawn in Feb.
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — Oaklawn Park says Kentucky Derby winner Calvin Borel is returning to Hot Springs next month.
Borel's agent says the jockey will start racing at Oaklawn on Feb. 4. Borel began the year riding at Gulfstream Park in south Florida.
Borel has a successful history at the Hot Springs race track. Two years ago, he rode Super Saver to a win at the Arkansas Derby before the horse won the Kentucky Derby. Borel also won the Kentucky Derby aboard Street Sense in 2007 and Mine that Bird in 2009.
Oaklawn's stakes season heats up in February with the $250,000 Southwest Stakes set for Feb. 20.
Miss Radiance wins Santa Anita feature
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Miss Radiance overtook pacesetter Bwana Babe and went on to a half-length victory in the $59,048 Bug Brush Purse for fillies and mares at Santa Anita on Thursday, sending sports talk radio host and co-owner Jim Rome to the winner's circle.
Ridden by David Flores, Miss Radiance ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:43.22 and paid $5, $3 and $2.20 as the 3-2 favorite. Bwana Babe returned $3.60 and $2.80, while Heidi Maria was another neck back in third and paid $3.60 to show.
The victory, worth $34,800, increased Miss Radiance's career earnings to $82,680, with two wins in six starts. The bay filly returned to the races in October after a year's absence.
Funky Munky Mama wins Big A feature
NEW YORK (AP) — Funky Munky Mama, the 3-2 favorite, led all the way on Thursday at Aqueduct, beating Superior Sarah by three quarters of a length in the $54,000 allowance feature for fillies and mares bred in New York.
Apprentice Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode for trainer Gary Gullo as the 4-year-old improved to 3 for 12. The time was 1:11.85 for six furlongs over the fast track.
Funky Munky Mama paid $5, $3.40 and $2.80. Superior Sarah returned $4.20 and $3.60 while Eden Is Burning paid $6.60 to show.
Hearts on Fire wins Oaklawn Park feature
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — Hearts on Fire edged Quest for Success by a neck Thursday in the $41,000 feature race for fillies and mares at Oaklawn Park.
Ridden by Alex Birzer, Hearts on Fire ran 6 furlongs in 1:13.92 and paid $14.20, $6 and $5.20. Quest for Success returned $4.40 and $3.40, and Bent Missile paid $3.60 to show.
