Horse Racing Capsules: Barbaro's brother entered in Florida Derby
Comments 0HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — Barbaro's brother Lentenor has been entered to run in the Florida Derby, a prep race for the Kentucky Derby.
Lentenor is the co-third choice at 6-1 in a field of 11 3-year-olds entered Wednesday for Saturday's $750,000 race at Gulfstream Park.
Rule was made the 5-2 favorite and brings a four-race winning streak into the Florida Derby. The colt is trained by Todd Pletcher.
Also in the field is Soaring Empire, owned in part by Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino.
Barbaro won the 2006 Florida Derby before his victory in the Kentucky Derby. Barbaro broke down in the Preakness and was euthanized eight months later.
Fountain of Youth winner Eskendereya is skipping the race for next month's Wood Memorial.
Big Zeb wins Queen Mother Chase
CHELTENHAM, England — Big Zeb overtook Forpadydeplasterer to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival on Wednesday, spoiling Master Minded's bid to win the race for the third straight year.
Ridden by Barry Geraghty, Big Zeb pulled away to win the race by six lengths in one of the surprises of the meet. Master Minded was the 4-5 favorite but finished fourth.
Forpadydeplasterer set a strong pace from the beginning of the two mile under jockey Tony McCoy. Kalahari King rallied to beat Master Minded for third.
Master Minded jockey Ruby Walsh said the ground was too quick for his horse in the $480,000 feature on the second day of the top meet of the jump season.
Canonize wins Santa Anita feature by 3¼ lengths
ARCADIA, Calif. — Canonize defeated Star Nicholas by 3¼ lengths to win Wednesday's $53,916 feature at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr., Canonize ran six furlongs in 1:08.44 and paid $3.60, $2.80 and $2.10 as the 4-5 wagering favorite.
Star Nicholas returned $6 and $4. Charm N Chuck was another nose back in third and paid $3.60 to show.
The victory, worth $29,400, increased Canonize's career earnings to $116,600 in five races.
French Dip wins Big A feature
NEW YORK — French Dip rallied to beat Tempest Storm by 1¾ lengths Wednesday in the $42,000 allowance feature for fillies and mares at Aqueduct.
A 4-year-old trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by David Cohen, French Dip got her second win in 11 starts. The time was 1:09.32 for the six furlongs on a fast track.
French Dip paid $8.90, $5.30 and $5.40. Tempest Storm returned $10.40 and $7.50. Credit Limit paid $4.80 to show.
