Texas College Basketball Capsules: Gant leads No. 12 Texas A&M past Michigan
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Danielle Gant scored 15 points and Takia Starks added 13 to help No. 12 Texas A&M hold off Michigan 59-56 on Thursday night.
The Wolverines were trying for their first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 12 Minnesota 57-47 on Feb. 29, 2004.
Michigan had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but Carly Benson's long 3-pointer bounced off the rim.
Tyra White added 12 points for Texas A&M (3-0). Jessica Minnfield scored 14 points to lead Michigan (1-2) and Krista Phillips added 13.
The Aggies got off to a slow start, shooting just 28 percent and letting Michigan build a 30-26 lead.
Texas A&M went ahead for good on Starks' jumper with nine minutes to go.
Michigan got within 57-56 with 13 seconds left, but Gant hit both ends of a one-and-one, forcing Benson's desperate last shot.
No. 14 Texas beats Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 87-36
AUSTIN - Kathleen Nash had 11 points and 12 rebounds, leading No. 14 Texas to a 87-36 rout of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday night.
Brittainey Raven scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half for the Longhorns (4-0), who took command with a 33-9 run in the first 15 minutes of the game.
Ashley Lindsey sparked Texas early, scoring eight points in the first 5 minutes. She finished with nine points and five rebounds.
The Longhorns went on another long run to open the second half, outscoring the Islanders 26-9 in the opening 10 minutes.
Jade Davis led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-2) with 10 points and four rebounds.
No. 24 TCU tops Texas-Arlington 70-45
FORT WORTH - Helen Sverrisdottir had 17 points and 12 rebounds to help No. 24 TCU overcome a terrible start in a 70-45 victory over Texas-Arlington on Thursday night.
The sophomore guard scored 11 of her points in the second half, when TCU (3-0) was nearly flawless. The Lady Frogs held the Mavericks (1-1) to 22 percent shooting and forced 11 turnovers while outscoring Texas-Arlington 41-24.
TK LaFleur added 13 points for TCU.
Erin Dixon scored 13 points to lead Texas-Arlington.
TCU missed its first 12 field goal attempts before Micaela Younger hit a 5-foot jumper in the lane with 14 minutes before halftime.
TCU went 9-for-37 from the floor in the first half, but the Lady Frogs went on a 18-0 run spanning 5 minutes to lead 35-21 with 18:37 left in the game. TCU forced 25 turnovers.

Texas Tech defeats East Central 167-115
LUBBOCK - Trevor Cook scored a career-high 20 points as Texas Tech defeated East Central 167-115 Thursday night in the Legends Classic.
Cook was one of 10 players in double figures for Texas Tech, which easily eclipsed the record for most points scored by the Red Raiders. Alan Voskuil and John Roberson each had 17 points and Mike Singletary and Wally Dunn each had 16.
Dontae Figgs scored 19 points to lead six East Central players in double figures. Justin Wilkerson scored 17 and Ian Adams added 15 for East Central.
Dunn hit one of his four 3-pointers with 7:43 left in the second half to give Tech 130 points, breaking the record of 128 points scored by Texas Tech in a double overtime win against Texas on Feb. 20, 1994.
Texas Tech (3-0) led 77-57 at the half.
East Central (0-1) already scored more than 100 points in two of its exhibition games.
Tech topped 100 points for the first time since Dec. 10, 2005, when it beat Texas-Pan American 103-50.
The 283 points scored in the game was also the most in school history for the Red Raiders.
White has 19 in North Texas win over Sam Houston
HUNTSVILLE - Josh White scored 19 points and hit a late 3-pointer to help lead North Texas to a 76-71 win over Sam Houston State on Thursday night.
Sam Houston State (1-2) led 63-62 with about five minutes to go before White made the shot that put his team up by two.
The Bearkats responded with two free throws to tie the game at 65-65, but could not take the lead the rest of the way.
Dominique Johnson scored 16 points for North Texas (2-1). George Odufuwa added 15 points and pulled down 11 defensive rebounds.
Corey Allmond scored 15, Barkley Falkner 13 and Preston Brown 11 for the Bearkats.
