Scorpions open home series against Lubbock Christian
The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College baseball team plays host to perennial power Lubbock Christian for a four-game series starting Friday at Scorpion Field.
The Scorpions and Chaparrals meet in a single game at 6 p.m. Friday, a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
LCU is ranked fifth in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's NAIA Preseason poll. The Chaps finished the 2008 regular season ranked first in NAIA and were eliminated in the regional playoffs. LCU had a record 38-game winning streak en route to a record of 53-4.
UTB-TSC coach Bryan Aughney is aware of the challenge his 1-3 Scorpions face
"LCU is a great program; they are national contenders every year," Aughney said. "We need to compete first and play within ourselves. If we take care of the baseball and take advantage of our opportunities, there should be some exciting games."
The Scorpions won their season opener against Wayland Baptist 12-2 but dropped the next three games to WBU. The Chaps will start their season Friday at Scorpion Field.
"Our team confidence is great. We know we have to improve daily and get better each time out," Aughney said. "The players worked really hard the last two weeks and are looking forward to getting back on the field."
Julian Moya (1-0) is the projected starter for Friday's nine-inning game. Twelve of the 18 batters he rretired were by way of strikeouts in the season opener against WBU.
Danny Gidora (0-1), who gave up ne earned run in six innings while striking out nine, is the probable starter for Saturday's opening game, while Tony Lerma (0-1) is expected to start the nightcap. Zack Moya (0-1) is likely to start Sunday's game.
Infielder Scott Price leads the team with a .429 batting average, and Ryan Macdonald (.417) leads the team in RBIs with five.
