College Sports Capsules: Forward Ater Majok leaves Connecticut

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut forward Ater Majok has withdrawn from school after playing just 26 games for the Huskies.

The school made the announcement Wednesday. No reason was given.

The 6-foot-10 Majok is a former refugee from Sudan who came to UConn from Australia, where his family had relocated after spending years in an Egyptian refugee camp.

He enrolled at UConn in 2008, but questions about his academic qualifications left him ineligible to play before last fall.

Majok entered his name into the 2009 NBA draft before later pulling out. He averaged just over two points and three rebounds as a freshman for the Huskies.

Hawaii recruits 7-foot center from Latvia

HONOLULU (AP) — The University of Hawaii men's basketball team says a 7-foot tall center from Latvia will be joining the Rainbow Warrior roster.

Davis Rozitis is due to transfer to UH after playing his freshman season for the University of Southern California. UH coach Gib Arnold had recruited and coached Rozitis when he was an assistant coach for the Trojans.

Rozitis appeared in eight games for the Trojans last season, scoring two points and grabbing seven rebounds in 28 total minutes of play. Before playing at USC, he was a member of the Latvian Under 20 national team.

Rozitis will sit out the next season under NCAA transfer rules. He'll have three years of eligibility remaining.

Guard Bryan Bock of Rialto, Calif., averaged 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists per game as a senior at Eisenhower High. He led the state of California with 114 3-pointers during the 2009-10 season.

And Jeff Huntsman of Sugar City, Idaho joins the Tech team after a few years away from organized basketball. He averaged 13 points and 11 rebounds per game as a senior at Sugar-Salem High. He has attended Idaho State.

UNLV's Wallace out for season with torn ligament

LAS VEGAS (AP) — UNLV guard Kendall Wallace will miss the 2010-2011 season after tearing a ligament in his right knee during practice.

University officials said an MRI on Wednesday morning revealed the injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Wallace was hurt during a practice session on Tuesday.

UNLV coach Lon Kruger says the injury is especially disappointing because Wallace is a senior.

Wallace will have surgery on the knee once swelling goes down.

Wallace is a reserve who averaged 6.9 points per game last season. He's considered the Rebels' primary 3-point shooter.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Gonzaga coach Mark Few is welcoming the addition of a strong Brigham Young basketball program to the West Coast Conference.

On Tuesday, BYU announced it would play as an independent in football and join the low-profile WCC, which Gonzaga has dominated for more than a decade, in other sports.

Few said BYU is a quality basketball program that has appeared in the Top 25 and many NCAA tournaments. He said it is positive for the league to add the Cougars next year.
