UTB-TSC Capsules: Scorpions earn first sweep in doubleheader this season
University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College pitchers Julian Moya and Danny Gidora threw complete games to lead the Scoprions to their first doubleheader sweep of the season, 7-1 and 5-3 over Fisher College (Mass.) on Saturday at Scorpion Field.
There will be two games each day at Scorpion Field through Friday, March 20.
Moya improved his record to 5-2 while Gidora won his first game in a Scorpions uniform after four losses.
"They both threw real well," Scorpions coach Bryan Aughney said. "Julian is giving us a great effort every weekend and continued to do that today, and Danny threw tremendously. They are competitors and that's what competitors do, they go out there and figure out how they're going to get it done."
The Scorpions (10-15) and Falcons (1-5) meet in another doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday as the Scorpions continue their 17-game home stand over a 15-day period.
The doubleheader sweep was the first this season for UTB-TSC's first-year coach.
"We're excited," Aughney said. "We played hard to get every win, and we're just happy going 2-0 on the day."
Juan Munoz went 4-for-7 for the day, driving in four runs and scoring twice. He had a triple in each game.
UTB-TSC 7, FISHER 1, GAME 1
Munoz had two singles and a triple to lead the Scorpions' seven-hit attack. He also scored two runs.
Gilberto Puente also drove in two runs, and Jorge Camorlinga scored twice.
Moya threw only 92 pitches, striking out seven, allowing four hits and walking only one. His ERA dropped to 2.90 as the only run he allowed came with runners on first and second on an infield double play. The runner from second scored on the play.
The Scorpions took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and were never threatened. Fisher cut the lead to 3-1 in the second before UTB-TSC made it 4-1 and added three more runs in the fourth.
UTB-TSC 5, FISHER 3, GAME 2
Gidora threw 111 pitches, striking out 11 and walking four. He allowed five hits, and two of the runs he allowed were earned.
Camorlinga and Jacob Yousif had two hits each to pace the Scorpions' seven hit attack. Camorlinga also drove in two runs.
The Scorpions scored three runs in the second inning, only to see the Falcons tie the game in the third at 3. A two-run fourth inning proved to be the clincher.
UTB-TSC golf in action today
University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College men's golf team will take part in the UST Texas Intercollegiate Golf Tournament on Sunday and Monday at the Hawks Creek Golf Course in Fort Worth.
The tournament, hosted by Texas Wesleyan, is the final one for the Scorpions before the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament from April 27 to 28 in Huntsville.
Coach Bob Lucio has two five-man teams at the tournament, which includes three conference rivals.
"We feel good about this course," Lucio said. "The only thing is that the greens have character. They are all unique."
The first team will include Vince Cavazos, Brock Crosson, Anthony Milligan, Vince Milligan and Matthew Mah. The second team will be made up of Jerry Borgogni, Victor Calzada, Vince Cavazos, Adam Haley and Joseph Lucio.
