RGV Ringside: De La Rosa to fight on Showtime in Oct.

Among active professional boxers in the Rio Grande Valley, welterweight Roberto "La Amenaza" Gar-cia of Weslaco (24-2, 17 knockouts) and light welterweight James "The King" De La Rosa of Harlingen (17-0, 12 KOs) are two of the top boxers record-wise.

At the moment, their careers appear to be taking divergent paths.

De La Rosa, 20, who won the WBC World Youth Welterweight title in 2007, is preparing for his fourth straight internationally televised fight. It is scheduled Oct. 3 on Showtime. The opponent and site have yet to be determined, according to Pete De La Rosa, James' father and trainer.

De La Rosa's three previous fights were televised by ESPN2, Telefutura and Galavision.

The Harlingen fighter is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision over Troy Wilson of Decatur, Ga. (9-7-1) aired June 13 on ESPN2 from Scranton, Pa.

"Like I said before, I feel good and very privileged that this is all happening for me," De La Rosa said Tuesday. "I'm just going to continue giving it my best."

De La Rosa said he's traveling to Arkansas this week, where he'll train for his upcoming fight the next five weeks.

Garcia, 28, last fought Nov. 30, 2007, in Brownsville when his bout against Freddy Hernandez of Mex-ico for the vacant IBA welterweight title was ended early in the third round and recorded as a no contest. The fight was stopped after Hernandez was injured by an accidental headbutt.

That night, Garcia voiced frustration over the way the fight was halted, and since then, has not ap-peared on any cards promoted by Julio Marines, his uncle.

Garcia was to have faced Hernandez in a rematch April 18 in Tucson, Ariz., but the fight never came off.

Earlier this month, the Weslaco fighter began training with Robert Campos in Brownsville. Campos said they planned to take a fight and see how things went before signing a fighter-trainer contract.

However, Campos said Monday it appears Garcia has left for Houston and may have decided to con-tinue training with someone else there.

FRUSTRATION: Brownsville welterweight Gilbert "El Chicano" Guevara was the most disappointed fighter at last Friday's Marines Promotion boxing show at Brownsville's Jacob Brown Auditorium. Guevara (7-4-1, 2 KOs) was scheduled to fight in the eight-round semi-main event against Texas welter-weight title holder Ramon Gatica (10-0, 5 KOs) of Austin.

The fight was canceled because Guevara wasn't 100 percent after recently suffering a pulled muscle in his upper body while using an axe to chop apart a tree as part of his workout regimen. He said the injury happened prior to Hurricane Dolly.

He had quit his job so he could have more time to prepare for the fight.

"It's definitely frustrating because I really took this fight seriously," Guevara said. "The fight's still go-ing to happen because this guy (Gatica) has been calling me out, but now I'm not sure when."

UPCOMING: Brownsville bantamweight Sergio Perales (6-0, 4 KOs), winner of Friday night's main event at Jacob Brown on a four-round unanimous decision against Roberto "Tratorcito" Perez of Mata-moros, is tentatively scheduled for his next fight in mid-September in Oklahoma City ... Julio Marines of Marines Promotions said he will stage his next boxing card at Jacob Brown in late October. He said 2008 Texas Cup Series Budweiser Boxing Blowout 4 will feature boxers representing the Valley going against fighters representing Mexico ... Anthony Cavazos of Cavazos Boxing Promotions said Eric Molina of Weslaco (7-1, 6 KOs) is scheduled to fight Oct. 3 in Houston for the Texas cruiserweight title.
