Soccer Capsules: Chivas' winning streaks ends at eight

MEXICO CITY — Chivas' record-breaking streak of eight victories to open the Mexico Clausura season came to an end on Saturday when the Guadalajara club lost 4-0 to Jaguares.

Jackson Martinez, Jorge Hernandez, Edgar Andrade and Christian Valdes scored for Jaguares.

Chivas' eight victories to start the season was the best by any Mexican club — professional or amateur. The best previous start for a Mexican club was by Marte with seven victories in 1928 in the amateur era.

Chivas' seventh straight victory set the mark for the best start since Mexican football went professional in the 1940s.

In another match Saturday, defending champion Monterrey won its fifth straight game, beating Pachuca 3-0. Monterrey improved to 22 points, just two behind Chivas. Hector Morales, Walter Ayovi and Val Baiano scored the goals.

In other matches, Cruz Azul defeated San Luis 2-1, Morelia beat Estudiatnes 2-0 and Atlas drew 1-1 with Toluca.

Emanuel Villa and Jaime Lozano scored for Cruz Azul, while Blas Perez scored San Luis' only goal.

Man U beats Wolves, goes top of Premier League

LONDON — Manchester United went top of the Premier League by winning 1-0 at Wolves and cash-strapped Portsmouth beat Birmingham 2-0 to reach the FA Cup semifinals on Saturday.

Paul Scholes scored the only goal after 73 minutes at Molineux as United overcame the loss of 28-goal Wayne Rooney, who was sidelined with a knee injury, and moved two points ahead of Chelsea, which plays in the FA Cup on Sunday, and Arsenal, which beat next-to-last Burnley 3-1. Chelsea has a game in hand on both.

The Wolves defense failed to clear a cross from Nani and Scholes moved the ball into space inside a crowded area and beat goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann with an angled shot for his 100th Premier League goal.

Wolves striker Sam Vokes squandered a golden chance to equalize in stoppage time when he was found unmarked in front of goal but lifted the ball over the bar from six meters.

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas fired home Samir Nasri's cross in the 34th minute for his 17th league and cup goal of the season but he went off with what appeared to be a right hamstring injury before halftime.

"How big the damage is we don't know yet because it's too early," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, whose team faces FC Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday and has to overturn a 2-1 deficit. "We'll see tomorrow and Monday. We will have to make a late decision if he plays on Tuesday certainly."

David Nugent equalized from Leon Cort's pass but Theo Walcott regained Arsenal's lead in the 60th minute for his first goal in 18 appearances, and Andrey Arshavin added the third in injury time.

Man United has 63 points from 29 games, Chelsea has 61 from 28 and Arsenal 61 from 29.

In Saturday's other Premier League game, Bolton won 2-1 at West Ham to improve its chances of avoiding relegation and push the home side deeper into trouble.

Kevin Davies headed the first from close range and provided the cross for Jack Wilshere to score his first goal for Bolton since his loan move from Arsenal. Alessandro Diamanti's reply for West Ham came only two minutes from the end. The victory moved Bolton up to 13th and five points above the relegation zone while West Ham is only three points away from danger.

On Sunday, Everton welcomes Hull and Liverpool goes to Wigan on Monday.

In FA Cup action, Frederic Piquionne scored twice in four minutes to give Portsmouth victory over Birmingham as the club reached the last four two years after winning football's oldest domestic cup competition.

But the visitors were unhappy that referee Steve Bennett ruled out a goal which TV replays showed crossed the line. By coincidence, it happened on the day that the International Football Association Board ruled out any more experiments with goal-line technology to decide such incidents.

Portsmouth, which is in financial administration and last in the Premier League standings, was 2-0 ahead when Liam Ridgewell's 81st-minute close-range header for Birmingham crossed the line before goalkeeper David James blocked it. But Bennett ruled it was not a goal.

"We should have had a lifeline with a perfectly legitimate goal but unfortunately it wasn't to be," said Birmingham manager Alex McLeish. "It would have given us a lifeline and I wouldn't bet against my team coming back if we got that goal.

"You would expect an official at this level to see that. They do the fitness tests and part of that is the vision side of things. It's a shame the guy missed that, I'm sure he will be hurting about it."

Asked if Birmingham scored a goal, James said: "Not as far as I was aware."

"Maybe we can debate that all the way home," James said. "We won 2-0 as far as the score goes and I think we deserved it."

Fulham and Tottenham fought out a 0-0 draw at Craven Cottage in a quarterfinal of few clear-cut chances. Tottenham defender Vedran Corluka almost turned a cross into his own net with a minute to go.

On Sunday, defending champion Chelsea hosts Stoke and Aston Villa goes to Reading, the League Championship club which knocked out Liverpool in round three.

Newcastle crushed Barnsley 6-1 and opened up an eight-point advantage at the top of the League Championship in its bid to go straight back to the Premier League after last season's relegation.

Nottingham Forest beat Swansea 1-0 to regain second place from West Bromwich Albion which lost 3-1 at Queens Park Rangers.

Real Madrid goes top after Barcelona held to draw

MADRID — An injury-time winner by Rafael Van der Vaart gave Real Madrid a 3-2 win against Sevilla and the lead in the Spanish league on Saturday after 10-man Barcelona drew 2-2 with Almeria.

A Xabi Alonso own goal gave Sevilla the lead in the ninth minute in Bernabeu Stadium. Ivica Dragutinovic scored the visitors' second in the 52nd, from a direct free kick which confused the Madrid defense and left goalkeeper Iker Casillas standing.

Cristiano Ronaldo cut the deficit in the 60th, sweeping the ball in with his left foot from a Marcelo cross, and Sergio Ramos equalized in the 64th, heading in from a corner.

Madrid and Barcelona both have 62 points after 25 games, with the former ahead on goal difference. Valencia was third on 46 points and Sevilla fourth on 44.

Earlier, Deportivo La Coruna came from behind to beat Tenerife 3-1 for fifth place.

Sevilla attacked Madrid down the wings early on, with Diego Perotti, Jesus Navas and Diego Capel unsettling the home defense.

However, Madrid started to find its rhythm as halftime approached and had a string of chances.

Alonso and Marcelo both tested Andres Palop with fierce shots and Gonzalo Higuain did well to strike a Ramos cross first time although the shot was straight at the goalkeeper.

Jose Maria "Guti" Gutierrez and Van der Vaart went on for Alvaro Arbeloa and Lassana Diarra early in the second half as Madrid looked for more attacking options.

The change nearly paid off as Guti struck the crossbar before Ramos leveled.

With Madrid pressuring for the winner, Higuain and Ramos lunged for a Ronaldo cross although both missed, letting the ball roll across the goalmouth.

Guti was at the heart of most of Madrid's attacks and he put Higuain through on goal in the 73rd, although the striker hit the crossbar.

Raul Gonzalez went on for Kaka in the 75th as Madrid poured forward until Van der Vaart found the net with seconds to spare.

At Almeria's Juegos Mediterraneos Stadium, Domingo Cisma jumped above Carles Puyol to head home in the 12th minute, then Lionel Messi equalized in the 42nd, fooling goalkeeper Diego Alves with a curling free kick.

Puyol was at fault again in the 57th when he stretched to intercept the ball and tapped into his own net, but Messi leveled for a second time.

"We played well, but the result is a shame," said Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes. "These are important points that have got away from us."

The start was delayed for 10 minutes after the home players were told that regulations prohibited them from wearing the slogan "Strength, Chile" on their shirts, in tribute to victims of the country's earthquake. However, they were eventually allowed to wear the message of support.

The pace was intense as Barcelona spent much of the game in possession and pressuring for equalizers.

Messi was particularly lively, and just failed to reach a rebound from Pedro Rodriguez's cross from the right in the eighth. In the 30th, Messi put Zlatan Ibrahimovic through although the striker shot just over. Messi then headed high from Daniel Alves' cross just before the break.

Almeria's 'keeper did well to get a hand to a Xavi Hernandez free kick and Ibrahimovic headed wide from Andres Iniesta's cross moments later.

Almeria also created several chances and Puyol made a last-ditch clearance as Albert Crusat followed up on the rebound from a shot by Guilherme Oliveira Santos.

Referee Clos Gomez expelled Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola from the dugout in the first half for protesting a decision. The Barcelona players were then outraged when Ibrahimovic was sent off on the hour after an altercation with Cisma.

At La Coruna's Riazor Stadium, Juan Luis Hens put Tenerife ahead in the 17th, controlling a pass from Pablo Sicilia with his first touch before shooting past goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia.

Juan Rodriguez headed in midfielder Andres Guardado's cross in the 33rd to equalize.

Guardado then scored himself early in the second half with a long-range strike, then Diego Colotto hit in a low shot from the edge of the area in the 67th.

In a game with few scoring chances, Aranzubia made a superb save to deny Tenerife's Juan Francisco "Nino" Martinez from close range in the 41st.

Guardado received an ovation as he was replaced by Lassad Nouioui 10 minutes from the end.

On Sunday it's: Malaga vs. Xerez; Espanyol vs. Villarreal; Mallorca vs. Sporting Gijon; Osasuna vs. Getafe; Athletic Bilbao vs. Valladolid; and Zaragoza vs. Atletico Madrid. On Monday it's Valencia vs. Racing Santander.

AC Milan draws 0-0 with AS Roma

MILAN — AC Milan drew 0-0 away to AS Roma and missed the chance to reduce Inter Milan's lead at the top of the Serie A on Saturday.

Both sides struggled to create chances. Julio Baptista went the closest in the first half and Marco Borriello in the second.

Milan missed the pace of the injured Alexandre Pato on the right wing, while Roma struggled in attack without Francesco Totti.

"We had our chances to win tonight," Milan's Andrea Pirlo said. "We should have taken some of them, but even so we had a good game.

"Of course we will be watching Inter tomorrow. We should have won, but now we have to think about Wednesday's game (against Manchester United in the Champions League)."

Inter remained top with 58 points and has the chance to extend its lead to six when it meets Genoa on Sunday. Milan was second with 55, and Roma another three points behind.

In Saturday's other match, Juventus moved back into the Champions League qualification places with a 2-1 win away to Fiorentina.

Diego gave Juventus the lead early but Marco Marchionni equalized before halftime. In the 69th minute though, Fabio Grosso marked his return from injury with the winner.

In Rome, Milan made the better openings in the first half, but failed to capitalize. Roma's Baptista hit a powerful drive but goalkeeper Christian Abbiati pushed it around the post.

Borriello shot wide when he had time and space in the area and he squandered another opportunity 10 minutes into the second half. He cut in off the left wing, went round Roma defender Juan but was unable to find a way past Julio Sergio.

In the last minute Klaas Jan Huntelaar headed Pirlo's cross over the bar from close range. A minute later John Arne Riise forced Abbiati into another desperate save to keep out his long-range drive.

Juventus took the lead in the second minute. Antonio Candreva picked out Diego with a through ball, he dummied Fiorentina keeper Sebastien Frey and rolled the ball into the empty net.

"We need to concentrate on improving the small things," Juventus coach Alberto Zaccheroni said. "We are improving. Today wasn't an easy game, but our first goal came after some fantastic interplay."

Fiorentina equalized with a header from Marchionni. Massimo Gobbi whipped over a cross, Juventus' defense allowed the ball to bounce, and the winger beat Juventus stopper Alex Manninger to the ball.

Grosso's second goal of the season was the winner. Mohamed Sissoko picked him out in the area and the fullback lifted the ball over Frey and inside the far post.

Bayern held to 1-1 draw at Cologne; Schalke wins

FRANKFURT — Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich was held to 1-1 at Cologne, allowing Schalke to pull within two points with a 4-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Former Bayern striker Lucas Podolski scored his first since September to give Cologne the lead after 32 minutes, before Bastian Schweinsteiger equalized to salvage a point for the visitors.

"We gave up two points in the first half," said Bayern goalkeeper Jorg Butt, who badly misjudged Poldolski's shot for the first goal. "We didn't have many chances in the first half and gave up a lot of chances. When you fall behind 1-0 it's tough to come back."

Bayern improved to 53 points from 25 rounds while Schalke moved to 51 points with its dominant victory at Eintracht.

Schweinsteiger said Bayern were done in by their own mistakes.

"We were first and wanted to take home three points," he said. "We knew that Cologne wanted to destroy our game with their defense. And they did. But with our quality we should have won this game. But we just couldn't get things done today."

Bayer Leverkusen have 50 points and can take the lead with a win at Nurnberg on Sunday.

Schalke grabbed a 2-0 lead after just 15 minutes and scored two goals in the final 10 minutes. Still, Schalke coach Felix Magath refused to include his club among the contenders for the Bundesliga title.

"We still have a long way to go," Magath said. "We saw again leading 2-1 that we were uncertain of ourselves. In the next few weeks we will be playing better opponents and we have to play a bit better."

Fourth-place Hamburg beat Hertha Berlin 1-0 thanks to Marcell Jansen's goal late in the first half.

Borussia Dortmund trail Hamburg by just one point in fifth place after a convincing 3-0 home victory over Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Mohamed Zidan scored twice and set up a third goal.

"We are satisfied to have finally won again after we struggled recently. If we can keep up playing like this, then we can stay among the European places," said Dortmund stirker Lucas Barrios.

Werder Bremen erased a two-goal deficit at home against Stuttgart for a 2-2 draw to sit in sixth place.

Edin Dzeko scored twice as Wolfsburg earned a 4-1 home victory over Bochum, and Hannover grabbed a critical 2-1 victory at fellow relegation candidate Freiburg.

Hannover snapped a nine-game losing streak and notched its first victory since Oct. 31, before the suicide death of Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke.

Auxerre beats Valenciennes in the French league

PARIS — Ireneusz Jelen's seventh goal this season gave Auxerre a 1-0 win over Valenciennes in the French league while seven-time champion Lyon missed a chance to move provisionally on top of the table on Saturday.

Having recovered from a back injury, Jelen struck in the 38th minute after being set up in the box by Roy Contout. The forward dribbled past goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau and slotted home into an open goal.

Auxerre, which has been defeated only twice in the past three months and claimed a fourth consecutive win in all competitions, was sixth in the standings with 48 points from 26 games.

League leader Bordeaux and Montpellier, who have 51 points each, lock horns on Sunday. Defending champion Bordeaux, which has two games in hand, tops the league thanks to a better goal difference.

Following three consecutive wins, Lyon was held to a scoreless draw at Boulogne to remain third with 50 points.

Boulogne midfielder Olivier Kapo had the best chance in the 55th minute but his acrobatic volley in the box ended just wide.

"We should have been more conquering in the first half," Lyon and France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris said. "We have to be content with this point and to move on. The game against Real will be very difficult, we'll need to be strong."

Still unbeaten in 2010, Lyon will travel to Spain next week for its Champions League last 16 second-leg clash with Real Madrid. Lyon won the first leg 1-0.

Fourth-placed Lille bounced back from a home loss to Auxerre last week with a 1-1 draw on the turf of a very enterprising Saint-Etienne side.

Saint-Etienne striker Emmanuel Riviere put his team ahead in the 17th minute with a 25-meter drive, and Stephane Dumont leveled from close range following a corner four minutes later. Saint-Etienne had the best chances in the second half but failed to turn them into goals.

After its humiliating 3-0 home loss to fierce rival Marseille, struggling Paris Saint-Germain escaped a new setback, securing a 1-1 draw at Lens thanks to Stephane Sessegnon's goal in injury time.

Lens midfielder Sebastien Roudet opened the scoring in the 67th minute with a deflected left-foot shot.

Sessegnon retrieved the ball in the box and scored from close range after substitute Younousse Sankhare hit the bar with a superb free kick.

About 40 PSG supporters were arrested before kickoff and their match tickets were confiscated after their club decided this week to bar them from traveling.

Clashes involving hooligans from the two main stands at PSG's stadium Parc des Princes erupted last week on the sidelines of the match against Marseille, leaving a 38-year-old in a life-threatening condition.

About 550 police officers were deployed in Lens and the stand reserved for the visiting fans in the Stade Bollaert was closed.

In Saturday's other results, it was: Nice 2, Nancy 3; Rennes 1, Monaco 0; and Sochaux 1, Toulouse 0.

Marseille could stay in the title race on Sunday if it earns a fifth straight win by defeating Lorient at Stade Velodrome. Marseille is in fifth place with 48 points.

Last-placed Grenoble hosts Le Mans in Sunday's other match.

Orlando Engelaar put PSV in front in the 18th but Donny Gorter and Robbert Schilder replied for NAC to snatch the win and hand PSV its first defeat of the season.

Second-placed Twente can reclaim the lead with a win at last-place RKC Waalwijk, while Ajax can close the gap at Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday.

PSV, which visits Ajax in the next round, leads the standings with 65 points, one more than Twente. Ajax was third with 58.

Jeremain Lens and Brett Holman also scored for AZ after Filip Djuricic gave Heerenveen the lead in the 20th.

Christian Kum got the game-tying goal in ADO The Hague's 1-1 draw against Vitesse Arnhem. Lasse Nilsson's 57th-minute score put Vitesse ahead before Kum netted eight minutes later.

Darl Douglas, Marko Vejinovic and Everton each scored to lead Heracles Almelo to a 3-2 victory against Willem II. Gerson Sheotahul scored in either half for Willem II.

PAOK Panthrakikos 3-0

ATHENS, Greece — PAOK beat last-placed Panthrakikos 3-0 to move to the top of the Greek league on Saturday.

Midfielder Olivier Sorlin scored one goal and set up another, and Stelios Malezas and Lino also scored.

After 25 rounds, PAOK has 56 points, one ahead of Panathinaikos and three more than defending champion Olympiakos in third. Panathinaikos hosts Levadiakos and Olympiakos travels to Iraklis on Sunday.

PAOK enjoyed most of the possession from the start, taking the lead in the 23rd minute when Malezas struck in a rebound after Panthrakikos goalkeeper Manuel Roca saved Vladan Ivic's header.

Edinho squandered a major chance in the 30th, sending the ball wide with only Roca to beat.

In the 42nd, Sorlin exploited a defensive mistake to make it 2-0.

PAOK keeper Costas Halkias made a decisive save from Fotis Constantinidis in the 76th, and three minutes later Lino capped the scoring off a cross by Sorlin.

Also, it was: Larissa 1,AEK 0 and Kavala 1, Aris 1.

Arsenal captain Fabregas injures hamstring

LONDON — Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas injured his right hamstring during the 3-1 victory over Burnley on Saturday and it's unclear if the team's leading goalscorer will be available for the Champions League match against Porto next week.

The Spain international came off in the 39th minute.

Five minutes earlier, Fabregas gave his side the lead with a side-footed volley from inside the six-yard(meter) box after Samir Nasri lobbed the ball over the Burnley defense. It was Fabregas' 14th goal of the season in the English Premier League.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said Fabregas will undergo tests on Sunday.

"How big the damage is we don't know yet because it's too early," Wenger said. "We'll see tomorrow and Monday. We will have to make a late decision if he plays on Tuesday certainly."

Wenger will be hoping that his captain recovers quickly to help Arsenal book a place in the Champions League quarterfinals. Porto brings a 2-1 lead into the second-leg match at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

Fabregas is also Arsenal's leading scorer in the Champions League with three goals.

He was sidelined for three weeks after aggravating the same hamstring on Dec. 27 against Aston Villa, a game in which he produced a 27-minute cameo appearance as a substitute and scored twice before limping off.

The issue is especially pressing since Arsenal's attacking options have been stretched this season. Main striker Robin van Persie has been sidelined since November after sustaining serious ankle ligament damage while on international duty with the Netherlands. Wenger hopes to have him back by the end of April.

Van Persie's fellow strikers Nicklas Bendtner, Eduardo da Silva and Carlos Vela have had injury problems over the course of the season and have only 12 goals between them in all competitions.

Bendtner had a poor performance on Saturday against Burnley, missing at least four clear-cut chances in front of goal, and Eduardo hasn't been the same since he broke his leg more than two years ago.

Wenger has had to rely on Fabregas and Andrei Arshavin to pick up the slack. On Saturday, Burnley striker David Nugent equalized to make it 1-1 in the second half. Theo Walcott put Arsenal back in the lead after a fine run and left-footed strike in the 60th minute before Arshavin added the third in the dying seconds of the match.

Wenger was particularly pleased with Walcott after the British media heavily criticized his performance for England against Egypt in a midweek friendly.

Walcott, who turns 21 on March 16, made bursting runs down the right and sent in dangerous crosses against Burnley.

"I think he does what a player has to do — not talk in the newspapers and let your performance talk on the pitch," Wenger said. "He didn't answer critics other than with a good performance today.

"That shows that he's mentally strong. I was interested as well how to see how he would respond today. I was quite sure he would respond with a good performance. But you never know how deep it affects you when you get criticized. The way he answered at his age is remarkable."

Adriano out for Flamengo Libertadores match

RIO DE JANEIRO — Flamengo striker Adriano is being held out of the upcoming Copa Libertadores match against Caracas after missing practice.

Coach Andrade says he would have liked to use Adriano for Wednesday's away game, but that the decision came "from the top" after the player didn't show for practices this week.

Adriano traveled to London with Brazil's national side for its 2-0 win over Ireland in a friendly on Tuesday.

He was expected to practice on Friday, but didn't show up.

Adriano abandoned Inter Milan last April, saying he was not happy in Italy. Since then, he has starred for his hometown team, leading them to a national championship last year.

Five PSG fans put into custody in Lens

LENS, France — Five Paris Saint-Germain supporters have been placed in custody while 70 others were fined for violating the order prohibiting access to the stadium for Saturday's French league match at Lens.

The sub-prefect of Lens, Isabelle Petonnet, added that 30 fans were arrested in Paris before boarding the train to Lens.

Police earlier said that 40 supporters were brought to a police station and their match tickets were confiscated, after PSG decided this week to stop selling tickets to its fans for away games.

Clashes involving hooligans from the two main stands at PSG's stadium Parc des Princes erupted last Sunday before and after a 3-0 loss to Marseille in the French league, leaving a 38-year-old in a life-threatening condition.

About 550 police officers were deployed in Lens and around the Felix Bollaert Stadium, where PSG supporters were banned under two orders issued by the prefecture.

The stand reserved for the visiting fans in the stadium was closed.
