Scorpions sweep doubleheader from Houston-Victoria
The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College put together two solid hitting and pitching performances in both ends of a doubleheader sweep over The University of Houston-Victoria on Saturday at Scorpion Field.
The Scorpions, who won 8-2 and 13-0, improved to 3-3. UHV dropped to 1-8.
The two teams meet in another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Sunday at Scorpion Field.
Matt Leffler and Danny Gidora turned in strong pitching performances for the Scorpions, who allowed eight hits in 12 innings of work. UTB-TSC had 12 hits in the opener and 13 in the nightcap. Jorge Camorlinga went 6 for 8 in the doubleheader.
"Matt did a good job. Aalthough he didn’t have his best stuff today, he did what he had to do to keep us in the ballgame," Scorpions coach Bryan Aughney said. "Danny did what Danny normally does. He gave us a great effort, he came in and threw strikes, which is what we’re looking for out of him.
"Offensively we swung the bats well and executed. When we play our game, good things happen. But (today is) a new day, and we got to forget about these games (Saturday)."
UTB-TSC 8, UHV 2
UHV scored single runs in the first two innings off Leffler to take a 2-0 lead before the Scorpions struck for four in the third to take a 4-2 advantage. The Scorpions added a single run in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Leffler went five innings, allowing one earned run and two hits. Kevin Chapman pitched two innings without allowing a hit.
Camorlinga led a 12-hit attack with three hits, and Matt Ginn blasted the team’s first homer of the year, a two-run blast in the third inning. Ginn, Gilbert Puente, and Brian Bustos each had two hits and drove in two runs. Ignacio Celedon had two hits and drove in one.
UTB-TSC 13, UHV 0
UTB-TSC scored four runs in the first inning four in the second and five in the third for its 13 runs. The game was called after four-and-one-half innings because of the 10-run rule.
Gidora was solid in four innings of work, striking out six and allowing four hits while throwing only 60 pitches. Luis Sanchez pitched the final inning for the Scorpions.
Camorlinga went 3-for-4 again, scoring three runs and driving in two. Warner was 2 for 3, scoring three runs and driving home four. Puente also had two hits and drove in three runs, and Celedon was 2 for 2 with two RBIs.
