Scorps finish SPI tourney 0-4

Based on how things went this weekend for the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College volleyball team, there's a tough road ahead.

On Saturday, the Scorpions dropped a pair of matches for the second straight day in the South Padre Island Challenge Volleyball Tournament to start the season 0-4. UTB-TSC lost to Morningside College (Iowa) 25-14, 25-12, 17-25, 25-14 and to Dordt College (Iowa) 25-12, 26-24, 25-10.

On Friday, The Scorpions fell in three games to Doane College (Neb.) and Oklahoma City University.

The two-day, nine-team tournament was played at Rivera High School because of damages caused to South Padre Island Conven-tion Centre, the original site, by Hurricane Dolly last month.

"We probably played the four best teams here," first-year UTB-TSC coach John Barnes said. "We have seen where it is we need to get to, and that should make the path to getting there a little bit clearer.

"We're not happy with how we played at all this weekend," he added. "I think some of our players are realizing just how much work they're going to have to put in so we can get there. Our task this next week will be to start down that road."

The next action for the Scorpions will be Sept. 5-6 at the Texas A&M International Tournament in Laredo.

The SPI Challenge Tournament turned out to be a showcase for the Great Plains Athletic Conference as Doane and Morningside both went 4-0. Dordt and Briar Cliff University (Iowa), two other teams from the GPAC, finished 3-1.

On Saturday, Doane defeated Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) 25-16, 25-19, 25-12 before downing Our Lady of the Lake University of San Antonio 25-21, 25-21, 25-13. Meanwhile, Morningside topped Our Lady of the Lake 25-14, 25-15, 25-16 before defeating UTB-TSC.

Briar Cliff downed Malone College (Ohio) 25-19, 20-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-11 before falling to OCU 25-21, 25-20, 25-23 in its final match.

Dordt stumbled against OCU 26-24, 25-15, 10-25, 10-25, 15-10 before rebounding for a decisive win over UTB-TSC.

In Saturday's other match, Olivet triumphed over Malone 25-18, 25-22, 25-22.
