Other College Sports Capsules: LSU freshman suspended from team after arrest

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri says a freshman pitcher from Bossier City has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested and booked with drunken driving.

Carson Baranik, 19, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison early Saturday on one count each of first-offense DWI, disobeying a red light and reckless driving, The Advocate reported.

The Cincinnati Reds took the right-hander in the 41st round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, but he decided to enroll at LSU and was expected to earn time as a reliever this season. Mainieri said he acted as soon as he learned of the incident Saturday.

"This is not the kind of behavior I expect or will tolerate from an LSU baseball player," Mainieri said.

He said he hopes Baranik will learn from his experience. "But for now, I can't let a person who would do those kinds of things represent our baseball team."

Baranik does not have a phone listed in Baton Rouge and could not be reached for comment Sunday. A police affidavit said Baranik was stopped after running a red light about 1:30 a.m. He smelled of alcohol and had glassy eyes, slurred speech and poor balance, according to the affidavit.

It said his blood-alcohol content was 0.144 percent, the affidavit says. A level of 0.08 percent for adults and 0.02 percent for anyone under the age of 21 is considered legal proof of intoxication in Louisiana.

Baranik is the second LSU pitcher booked with DWI in just over a year.

Kevin Koziol was dismissed from the team after a January 2011 arrest on charges of DWI, reckless driving and disobeying a red light.

"Every situation is a little different," Mainieri said.

University of Montana names defensive coordinator

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — Ty Gregorak has been named defensive coordinator for the University of Montana football team. Head coach Robin Pflugrad announced Friday Gregorak's promotion from assistant coach to the new position.

The 33-year-old Gregorak worked as an assistant coach at the school for eight seasons with a one-year break in 2010 when he coached at Central Washington. He returned to Montana last spring and coached the linebackers.

Pflugrad says Gregorak brings a lot of experience to the program and has done an outstanding job recruiting players.
