UTB-TSC: Scorpions break school stolen base record in 11-0 rout of SAGU
WAXAHACHIE — The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College broke a school record with 14 stolen bases and cruised to an 11-0 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University at the Waxahachie Sports Complex Friday in the Red River Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
The two teams meet in a doubleheader at noon Saturday to wrap up the three-game series. UTB-TSC plays at Texas Lutheran on Sunday in Seguin.
Scorpions starting pitcher Kevin Chapman had a no-hitter going for five innings and gave up one hit — a double in the sixth inning. Zach Armstrong pitched a scoreless seventh.
Chapman, 2-0, finished with seven strikeouts and no walks. His season ERA is now 0.87.
After three innings, the Scorpions had 10 stolen bases and had broken the school record. They finished with 14 steals in 14 attempts. Jorge Camorlinga has three stolen bases and Peter Maldonado, Matt Ginn, Adam Miller and Brad Regehr two each.
UTB-TSC benefitted from eight SAGU walks, four wild pitches, two errors and two batters hit by a pitch.
The Scorpions scored one run in the first, two in the second, six in the third and two in the fifth. The game was scheduled for nine innings but stopped after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.
Joel Fernandez and Nick Loftis were the only Scorpions players with two hits to lead the 10-hit attack. Ginn, Maldonado and Regehr each scored twice. Fernandez and Matt Warner each drove in two runs.
The previous Scorpions stolen base record was nine set on Feb. 9, 2007, in the inaugural Scorpion baseball game in the NAIA, UTB-TSC lost to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor that day, 6-5.
The NAIA stolen base record by a team in a single game is 22 set by Coker College (S.C.) vs. Warren College in 1993. Coker was 22 for 22 in stolen bases in that game.
