Barnes resigns as Scorpions volleyball coach

University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College volleyball coach John Barnes has resigned, director of athletics Vernon Mummert announced Monday.
Barnes took over as coach of the Scorpions in June. UTB-TSC finished the 2008 season with a 10-23 record and was eliminated in the Red River Athletic Conference tournament semifinals.
Barnes came to UTB-TSC after four years as coach at Port Isabel, where he also taught physics. He previously served as a volunteer assistant coach with the Scorpions during the 2004 and 2005 seasons and also was an assistant coach during the 1999 to 2001 seasons at Cedar Valley College in Dallas.
A national search for a successor will begin immediately.
