Trevino leads over Wood; winner will face Republican Cascos
Former Brownsville Mayor Eddie Treviño Jr. led in the Democratic Party primary for Cameron County judge late Tuesday, but was unable to avert a runoff election with John Wood.
In a final but unofficial tally, Treviño received 7,846 votes, followed by Wood, the county commissioner for Precinct 2, with 5,476 votes, and 2,406 votes for community activist Rebecca Gomez.
Treviño, also a former city commissioner, said he was "humbled" by the support and extended his appreciation to his supporters.
The race had been "extremely difficult," he said, adding that Wood, Gomez, and he ran a "very positive campaign."
The runoff date is April 13.
"I think we all really ran a really good clean campaign. I was proud of them (Treviño and Gomez), as well as I was with myself," Wood said. He also extended his appreciation to supporters.
The winner faces Republican Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos in November.
Treviño was elected to the Brownsville City Commission in December 2001. He became mayor in 2003 and served one term.
Wood first served as a Brownsville city commissioner from 1994 to 2002, when he resigned to run for county commissioner. Wood has been serving as Precinct 2 county commissioner since 2003.
Gomez said that running for office had been a "great experience," and she pointed out that she knew that she was going against the status quo of political ties, influence, and big money.
