South Texas water desalination projects honored
Three South Texas organizations have been recognized for their efforts to provide drought-proof sources of drinking water to communities in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
The Brownsville Public Utilities Board, North Alamo Water Supply Corp., and Harlingen-based NRS Consulting Engineers received the 2007 Desalination Project of the Year award from the WateReuse Association.
WateReuse Association, a nonprofit organization aimed at promoting solutions to water supply challenges, recognized the desalination project in the face of ongoing drought, declining water supplies from the Rio Grande and a population boom.
Brownsville PUB launched a pilot facility in February, the first ever seawater desalination facility in Texas, designed and constructed by NRS.
The plant is expected to produce up to 25 million gallons of water per day, enough for one-third of Brownsville’s projected demand.
