Border wall protest scheduled for Saturday
Organizers hope to ‘become one force’
Hundreds of protestors are expected to gather Saturday afternoon at Alice Hope Park to form a human wall along the banks of the Rio Grande. Demonstrators then plan to march down Elizabeth Street protesting the construction of a wall along the U.S-Mexico border.
The event will be hosted by CASA, or, Coalición de Amigos en Solidaridad y Acción (Coalition of Friends in Solidarity and Action), said the group’s founder, Elizabeth Garcia.
The event is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. at the downtown park, located at 1300 E. Levee St. A pre-walk pachanga is scheduled for 4 p.m. that day at San Felipe De Jesus Catholic Church, 2215 Avenida Rancho Viejo.
In the Upper Rio Grande Valley, the Coalition Against Immigrant Repression will hold a similar event on Saturday. Demonstrators will get on boats and travel downstream on the Rio Grande, eventually making their way to the Roma City Hall, where a protest is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Garcia said that in Brownsville people will form a human wall along the banks of the Rio Grande near Hope Park before marching down Elizabeth Street to signify unity.
She hopes to join forces with other groups in the Valley to put forth a unified message against the proposed border wall.
Saturday’s event will help push for immigration reform, she said.
The group will end its walk at the Jacob Brown Auditorium, where they will break a piñata in a shape of a wall.
