PHARR -- Something did not seem right with a minivan that a tractor trailer driver had picked up Tuesday morning.
The olive green Ford Windstar reeked of marijuana.
So the driver called McAllen police to check out the van before he headed northbound past the Falfurrias checkpoint with the other vehicles destined for other states.
Police met the tractor trailer in the parking lot of El Centro Mall about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Inside the unlicensed minivan, officers discovered several bundles of marijuana concealed beneath its floor apholstery, McAllen police Sgt. Efrain Alejandro said at the scene. He said police have seen the tactic more often recently as drug traffickers attempt to move their illegal commodities northward.
The vehicle had been picked up from another location in McAllen earlier Tuesday morning, Alejandro said. Police continue to pursue the suspects who originally tried to ship the van.
Police have called in investigators from the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area task force to investigate the drug bust. Information on exactly how much marijuana was concealed inside the van was not immediately available early Tuesday afternoon.
The truck driver was released from the scene as police continue to investigate.
