LOPEZVILLE — A suspect was arrested after a man was found shot to death early Sunday morning in the Lopezville area, between Pharr, San Juan and Edinburg city limits.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed it received a 1:06 a.m. call saying a man was down along Rodriguez Street, just northeast of “I” Road and Minnesota. There, they found a man’s body.

The Sheriff’s Office has arrested one suspect and believes it knows the identity of a second person who may have been involved, Sheriff Lupe Treviño said.

Treviño said the Sheriff’s Office was investigating whether the shooting was gang-related and trying to confirm a statement by the victim’s wife that he was a gang member.

“We believe the Chicanos fired the shots and hit — let me stress this — an unconfirmed member of the Tri-City Bombers,” the sheriff said.

The Tri-City Bombers — so named to represent Pharr, San Juan and Alamo — was formed in Lopezville more than 20 years ago. The gang has a long-standing rivalry with the Texas Chicano Brotherhood.

“We have some extremely positive leads on the identity of the shooters,” he said.

No more details were available regarding the identity of the victim or any suspects. The investigation is still under way.
