Wildlife Expert to speak at UTB-TSC today
Wildlife expert and Ford Foundation Chair Kathryn S. Fuller will speak at the UTB-TSC Spring Distinguished Lecture Series today at 7 p.m.
Fuller will give her lecture on the “Challenges to Conservation of the Natural World,” the proceeds of which will benefit University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College student scholarships.
Fuller received her bachelor’s degree in English and American Literature from Brown University and her law degree from The University of Texas at Austin. She was the President and CEO of the World Wildlife Foundation from 1989 until 2005. There, she focused her efforts on including women in grassroots conservation. She is also a director of Alcoa, the world leader in the production and management of primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum and alumina combined, according to its website.
Juliet V. Garcia, the president of UTB-TSC, invited Fuller to speak on campus. Garcia also serves on the board of the Ford Foundation and calls Fuller both a colleague and a friend.
“She is an attorney by trade but she has spent her life using her expertise to preserve wildlife,” Garcia said. “For me she epitomizes a successful woman who has committed her life to one focus and pursued it relentlessly. But when you meet her she is just as humble and unassuming as could be. She really knows how to peel off the fluff and just do the important work. I admire her greatly.”
Fuller’s speech will be the second annual for UTB-TSC’s Spring Distinguished Lecture Series, which began last year with attorney Hind Aboud Kabawat.”
Tickets to this year’s lecture are $25. The talk will take place at the Science, Engineering, and Technology Building Lecture Hall. For tickets, call (956) 882 4332.
