Public hearing today on UTB-TSC tuition increase proposal
UTB-TSC will hold its final public hearing today for tuition and fee increases at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Gorgas Hall Board Room and time will be allotted for public comment.
The university, which has the second lowest tuition in the University of Texas System, can increase tuition by a maximum of 3.95 percent or $280, according to Tony Zavaleta, associate provost and co-chair of the Tuition Policy Advisory Committee.
"It is our responsibility as appointed by the president of the university to be very frugal," Zavaleta said. "We will propose to the president only what we can clearly justify as necessary. We are constantly cognizant of the pressures our students face."
The current tuition for a student taking 15 credit hours is $2,749 per semester, the combined costs of individual credit hours and compulsory fees, such as fees for athletics and student services.
The current designated tuition per semester credit hour is $82.50. The proposed tuition would be $91.83 per semester credit hour, a change of a little more than $9.
Additional fees are also being proposed for particular academic programs, such as a $45-$180 architecture program fee.
Once the public meetings are completed, the school’s Tuition and Fees Policy Advisory Committee will prepare its recommendations. These will be sent to the Provost’s Committee, which will prepare recommendations for Juliet V. Garcia, the president of the university. Garcia will then deliver her recommendations to the UT Board of Regents.
Designated tuition per semester credit hour:
Current - $82. 50
