Tropical wave headed toward Yucatan Peninsula

June 26, 2009 - 11:15 AM

A tropical wave over the western Caribbean Sea continues to produce a large area of showers and thunderstorms from Cuba and the Cayman Island southwestward to Honduras.

The National Hurricane Center says the system is expected to reach the Yucatan Peninsula Saturday morning. Once it moves into the southern Gulf of Mexico there is up to a 50 percent chance of the tropical wave becoming a tropical depression.

Heavy rain continues over portions of Cuba and the Cayman Islands and are spreading west over Central America and the Yucatan Peninsula.
