Mistrial in south Texas police chief assault case
EDINBURG (AP) — A jury deadlocked in the aggravated assault trial of a Valley police chief so a judge then declared a mistrial.
Edcouch and La Villa Police Chief Eloy Cardenas was accused of shooting at his wife's ex-husband, Isidro Rodriguez, in February 2008 when the former spouse drove by the Cardenas home.
Nobody was hurt in the alleged long-running domestic dispute. Cardenas, who claimed self defense, declined comment following Thursday's mistrial decision in Edinburg.
The jurors deadlocked 6-6 on whether a crime was committed.
Prosecutors plan to retry Cardenas later this year. If convicted, the police chief could lose his peace officer's license and be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
