UTB “A” team defeats Columbia; “B” team falls to UTD

The University of Texas at Brownsville “A” team defeated Columbia University 4-0 in Round 5 of the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championships in Fort Worth on Thursday, Dec. 29.

Grandmaster Timur Gareyev (Board 1), Grandmaster Mauricio Flores (Board 2), Grandmaster Axel Bachmann (Board 3) and International Master Max Cornejo (Board 4) all won their games. The UTB “A” team now has four points after five rounds.

The UTB “B” team lost to The University of Texas at Dallas “B” team 3.5 to .5.

International Master Alfonso Almeida lost on Board 1, Woman Grandmaster Katerina Nemcova lost on Board 2, Woman Grandmaster Nadya Ortiz lost Board 3 and Woman International Master Luciana Morales drew on Board 4. The UTB “B” team has three points after five rounds.

The final round is at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30.

The top four finishers will qualify for the 2012 President’s Cup, the “Final Four of College Chess,” to be held March 31 to April 1 in Herndon, Va.
