Boca Chica Target to close

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Brownsville will be a one-Target town as of Jan. 30, 2010, according to an in-store memo obtained by the The Brownsville Herald.

On that date, the Target location that opened at 2940 Boca Chica Boulevard 14 years ago will close its doors permanently, according to a memo to employees from store manager David DeLaFuentes. DeLaFuentes declined to confirm the closing, referring questions to Target’s corporate media office. A Target spokeswoman said the company was not prepared to release details until today.

The Boca Chica location will operate normally until the closing date, according to the memo, at which time a skeleton crew of employees will be required to move inventory to other stores. Employees in good standing were being given the opportunity to transfer to hourly positions at other locations. The Boca Chica store held its grand opening on Oct. 8, 1995, with an appearance by then "Young and the Restless" soap opera star Philip Moon.

Brownsville’s second Target opened at Morrison Road and 77/83 Expressway in June 2006. The opening coincided with the "grand re-opening" of the Boca Chica location, which had undergone a major renovation.
