Subjects needed in aspirin study
HARLINGEN — The Regional Academic Health Center continues its search for participants for a study on benefits of aspirin.
The study is being conducted by the school of medicine of the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.
The RAHC, a campus of the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, is seeking participants age 65 and older and of an ethnic minority, including Hispanics.
The study, titled "Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly," is focusing on whether the potential benefits of aspirin in low doses outweigh the risks for people age 65 and older.
The study began in 2010 and currently has 100 subjects enrolled in San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley.
"We are looking for at least another 80 healthy subjects in South Texas and are concentrating our efforts solely on ethnic minorities," said Sara Espinoza, a physician and ASPREE’s lead investigator.
Espinoza is a professor of geriatrics in the school of medicine and is an investigator with the Center for Healthy Aging, according to a recent UT Health Science Center San Antonio release.
Participants are randomly assigned to either a treatment group taking aspirin or a control group taking an inactive placebo and are not notified of their assignment, according to the release.
