UTB-TSC to receive $1.2 million grant
A $1.2 million grant aimed at preparing high school students for college is headed for UTB-TSC, the university announced Thursday.
The AmeriCorps grant will employ 50 students who attend the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College to work as mentors at high schools in Brownsville, San Benito, Raymondville, Rio Hondo, Port Isabel and Los Fresnos.
The students will spend 20 hours a week motivating high school students to graduate and begin college with advanced preparation, like dual enrollment and advanced placement courses. UTB-TSC students will be paid $10 per hour.
The school will receive more than $386,000 each year for three years.
"They will also be doing presentations with the parents, counselors, students. They will volunteer on their own time in the community," Pat Skipper, a development research associate in the Office of Enrollment Management, said in a press release.
