CBP: Matamoros man tried to smuggle $88,000 of marijuana into U.S.

Federal agents discovered nearly 100 pounds of marijuana that a 19-year-old man was allegedly trying to smuggle into the U.S.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the B&M International Bridge Saturday sent Jose Andres Martinez Magdaleno, 19, of Matamoros, to secondary inspection, according to a CBP press release.

When officers took a closer look at the 1994 Chevrolet Silverado the Mexican national was driving, they discovered 33 packages of marijuana hidden within the truck.

The truck and 88 pounds of marijuana, valued at $88,100, were seized. The case was turned over to ICE special agents.

Martinez is charged with conspiracy to possess with intention to distribute. He appeared a federal judge Monday and remains behind bars. Martinez is scheduled to be back in court on Thursday.
