BISD school board member Susan Galvan was appointed May 26 as principal at Martin Middle School in the Austin Independent School District but plans to serve out her term on the BISD board of trustees.

Galvan was elected in May 2005 to Position 6 on the Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees. The position comes up for election in November.

Galvan said she has resigned her position as director of operations for the Los Fresnos Independent School District but has not yet signed a contract with the Austin district. Once she signs a contract, she said she would make a statement about her plans, including service on the BISD board.

The Web site of the Austin Independent School District reports Galvan's appointment as Martin Middle School principal, noting that she has served as a secondary school administrator in the Brownsville and Los Fresnos school districts.

"As of now I am an elected official, I reside in Brownsville and as far as I know I'm entitled to serve on the board," Galvan said Monday. "I will be serving as an elected official but I will not run for re-election," she said when asked whether she planned to resign her position on the BISD Board.

Board president Dr. Enrique Escobedo said he had not yet talked to Galvan about the appointment, but that as long as she resides within BISD, she is entitled to serve on the district's board of trustees.

Galvan is a former Pace High School assistant principal and had been director of operations for the Los Fresnos Independent School District, according to Brownsville Herald archives.

BISD administrators were not immediately available for comment.
