Rio Hondo students found with gun at school
Comments 0 | Recommend 0RIO HONDO — A high school student in possession of a handgun prompted school officials to activate the district’s emergency procedures Thursday afternoon, a news release states.
The student was taken into custody and the handgun was confiscated, school administrators added.
Superintendent Anneliese McMinn stated in the news release that Rio Hondo High School officials became aware of the handgun after the school district’s police received a tip.
It was unclear when the police received the tip. McMinn and the Rio Hondo School Police could not be reached for comment.
“We assure you that the student will be adjudicated and will no longer be on campus,” the news release states.
The Rio Hondo Police Department was not dispatched to the high school to respond to the incident. The RHPD is called to the school if school police need assistance because the school is outside city limits.
“We would like to commend the police officers and the staff for their swift and thorough actions,” the release from McMinn and RHHS Principal Michelle Everett states.
“Rest assured that we are all diligently working to keep each and every student safe at Rio Hondo High School.”
