Teen charged with killing newborn son

A Brownsville teen is charged with capital murder and being held on a $1 million bond in connection with the death of his newborn son.

Brownsville police say the grandmother of 1-month-old Marco Avila took the infant Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville Monday morning.

Brownsville Police Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique says doctors noticed the infant was sufferering from signs of abuse.

"The child had markings on the face, had a swollen face, bruising and also had a broken bone on the collarbone," Manrrique said.

Police say 17-year-old Israel Avila quote – "lost it" – when the baby wouldn’t stop crying. He allegedly squeezed the infant’s head and tried to stuff a pacifier in his mouth to keep him from crying.

Little Marco Avila was transferred to the children's hospital at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen where he passed away Monday afternoon.

Avila was arraigned this morning on capital murder charges and his being held at the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito.
