Aug/25 Storms threatening rain
#A disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico has been flirting with Brownsville since
Wednesday.
"It's just sitting offshore," said Joe Snider, a meteorologist for the
National Weather Service in Brownsville. "I'm looking at the spiraling rain
right now on my radar, and I'd say it's just a few miles offshore from
Brownsville."
A 30 percent chance of rain is expected today.
"Tomorrow (Friday) we will start feeling some of the effects from a tropical
storm that hit Florida," Snider said.
"It's slowly drifting northwest but it's spreading out. Actually, this little
disturbance we have now is taking in some of that moisture that we can see
from satellite."
Students at The University of Texas began the fall semester Thursday with
notebooks and umbrellas in their arms.
"I'm not taking any chances," said Ruth Elizondo as she walked to class.
"This is that time of year when it rains unexpectedly."
Of the the two hurricanes out in the Caribbean -- Hurricane Humberto and
Hurricane Iris -- meteorologists said they won't know where they are actually
going to hit until about another week.
