New CASA volunteers sworn in
Judge Gustavo Garza swore in new volunteers to be new Court Appointed Special Advocates for chil-dren Tuesday in Brownsville.
The volunteers will be assigned to children in Cameron and Willacy Counties who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect.
They will advocate for children caught in the legal system, providing factual information pertinent to their cases that reflect what is in the child’s best interest. If you would like more information on becom-ing a CASA, please call 956-546-6545.
Reyes receives foundation
Luis Fernando Reyes of Brownsville has been selected to receive a Sumners Fellowship beginning in the fall of 2008.
The fellowship, which is awarded by the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation of Dallas, is for $5,000 per se-mester, or a total of $10,000 per year. The fellowships are awarded in the sophomore year and are good for the junior and senior years.
Reyes is a sophomore history major at Southwestern University. After graduation, he hopes to either attend graduate school or participate in Teach for America.
Reyes is the son of Raul and Martha Mendoza of Brownsville. He is a 2006 graduate of Rivera High School.
