Brownsville receives a half-foot of rain from Hurricane Alex

A total of 4.56 inches of rain have been recorded in Brownsville from 2 a.m. through 2:44 p.m. from the bands sparked by Hurricane Alex, the National Weather Service in Brownsville reports.

They also say that they have confirmed that several tornados have touched down in the Lower Cameron County area.

“And it’s not the end,” forecaster Jim Campbell said of expected rainfall of up to 12 inches and 20 inches in some areas by Friday.

As of 2:44 p.m., two tornadoes had touched down in Port Isabel and U.S. Hwy 281 and a funnel cloud had been spotted in downtown La Feria.

At 2:44 p.m., also, Campbell said that a tornado was coming on shore in north Cameron County, about 20 miles east of San Benito and moving west.

At the city of Brownsville command center at the Central Library branch officials say recorded nearly six inches of rain since Tuessday night.

Flooding was also occurring on FM 803 and Abrego Road between Brownsville and Los Fresnos.

Crews with the City of Brownsville were busy pumping water at a nearby canal trying in an attempt to help alleviate the flooding.

Children from the Abrego neighorbood played in the flooded streets during a brief reprieve of rainfall.
