Cold front brings heavy rains to the Valley

Small hail possible

Heavy rains are descending on the Rio Grande Valley as a strong cold front makes its way through the area.

Temperatures have dropped about 20 degrees this afternoon to 66 degrees.

Earlier this afternoon, fixed marine sites along the Kenedy County Coastline and in the Laguna Madre area reported sustained winds near 50 mph with gusts more than 65 mph.

Weather officials said similar storm structure is developing from Eastern Hidalgo County into Central Willacy County and is moving rapidly southeast toward Cameron County and Eastern Willacy County.

Some parts of McAllen reported receiving up to 2 inches of rain. Heavy rainfall is being reported in and around the Harlingen area.

Weather officials said the storms could bring strong winds of up to 50 mph and small hail.

Officials are reporting this is a dangerous storm and the strong winds could cause major structural damage. Residents living in mobile homes are expected to seek shelter elsewhere.
