Police Briefs: Burglars wake up homeowner
A Brownsville homeowner awoke abruptly Tuesday morning when she heard noises made by a trio of burglars breaking into her home, police said.
Police were called to 19 Sunset Drive at approximately 2 a.m. and shortly afterward arrested 18-year-old David Peralta and a 16-year-old girl. They were later charged with burglary of habitation. Peralta was also charged with burglary with intent to commit other felonies and theft of motor vehicle, said police spokesman Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique.
Police are also looking for the third bandit but are not releasing his name because of the ongoing investigation, Manrrique said.
The burglary took place when the trio forced the backdoor of the house open and tried to take several items from the residence; however, the noise made by the burglars, the house alarm and the family dog forced the burglars to flee. The 53-year-old homeowner was also awaken, the spokesman said.
Police tracked down Peralta, who fled in a red Ford Explorer to an open area along FM 802 where the 16-year-old teen was waiting with a stolen Nissan sports car, police said.
"These guys had a busy night. They began with a burglary at 1821 Palm Blvd.," Manrrique said. "They took a 2007 Nissan 350 Z, a laptop, a Rolex, an iPod, and even the homeowner's wallet."
Police arrested the two and recovered all the items taken, the spokesman added.
