Four days after nearly drowning during a bathing accident, an 8-month-old boy continues to fight for his life, police said.

The infant is still listed in critical condition and is hooked up to life support at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, said Brownsville Police spokesman Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique.

"There's been no change in his condition," Manrrique said.

The boy's 19-year-old mother has not been charged for the near drowning, however police continue investigating the incident, the spokesman said.

On Wednesday afternoon EMS and police rushed to an apartment complex at the intersection of Palm Boulevard and Jackson Street in response to the near drowning.

"The mother was bathing the 8-month-old boy and another 2-year-old," Manrrique said. "She left them unattended for a few moments and returned to find the boy unconscious."

Paramedics arrived to find the boy unresponsive and began resuscitation procedures, police said.

When bathing an infant it is imperative to be attentive at all times and never leave a child unattended, Manrrique said.
