Police investigate near drowning

Brownsville police are investigating the near drowning of an 8-month-old boy, police said

The infant nearly lost his life at about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday in an apartment at the intersection of Palm Boulevard and Jackson Street, while a mother was bathing her two children, said police spokesman Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique.

The mother left the two children unattended for a few moments and returned to find the infant unconscious, Manrrique said.

"When EMS arrived the 8-month-old was unresponsive and was transferred to Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville as a code blue," said Manrrique, referring to the hospital code that means the child needed to be resuscitated.

The child's mother was taken to the police station where investigators and Child Protective Services are looking into possible negligence, police said

The infant was listed in critical condition Wednesday at press time.
