Train severs man's foot

McALLEN — A suspected undocumented immigrant lost his left foot Monday night after he was run over by a cargo train.

According to police, the accident occurred just after 8:30 p.m. on a stretch of railroad tracks north of the intersection of Bicentennial Boulevard and Business 83, near Date Palm Avenue.

The man cut through two box cars of the parked train to cross the tracks. But while he was still between the cars, the train went into reverse, pinning him underneath, McAllen police Sgt. Eduardo de la Rosa said.

The impact severed the man’s left foot and may have cost him his leg.

Emergency responders rushed him to McAllen Medical Center; he remained at the hospital early Tuesday.

Police have still not positively identified his name or his age.

“He’s not been forthcoming with all his information,” de la Rosa said.

As of Monday night, investigators had ruled the incident an accident. Police chief Victor Rodriguez said he hoped to have an identification of the man and an update on his condition by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
