Brownsville Police Officer's Association to host annual fishing tournament
The Brownsville Police Officers’ Association will host its annual fishing tournaments this weekend at Boca Chica Beach.
The seventh annual children’s tournament, open to ages 8 to 16, is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult. A $5 donation is required and winners will receive prizes.
The 26th annual Redfish Surf-Fishing Tournament will take place Sunday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Hundreds have showed up for past events. This weekend the main tournament will feature four different fishing categories that offer cash prizes ranging from $50 to $1,000 for first through third place.
The fourth category — besides the red fish, drum and trout catches — is the “largest of the hour.” Catfish and stingrays are not allowed, but each hour the angler with the biggest catch wins $50.
Organizers call it one of the largest fishing tournaments in Texas.
Police spokesman Eddie Garcia said because participants don’t require a boat or high-end equipment to compete, the tournament is a huge draw to the general public.
The event helps support the Brownsville Police Officers’ Association.
Advance tickets for Sunday’s tournament are $15 per person and available at Gordon’s Bait and Tackle. Tickets are $20 the day of the event.
