Bond set for murder suspect
Comments 0 | Recommend 0A 30-year-old Brownsville man accused of killing a 20-year-old El Ranchito man is being held at a county jail on a $250,000 bond.
Efrain Puente was arraigned Thursday morning by Cameron County Magistrate Judge Luis V. Saenz, who set his bond, said Jason Moody, a spokesman for the Cameron County District Attorney's office.
"Prosecutor Sam Smith recommended on behalf of the state that bond be seat at $250,000, due to the fact that Puente's criminal history includes convictions for burglary of a building in 1996 and aggravated assault in 1999, for which he served a total of six years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (prison system)."
Puente was arrested at 1 a.m. Wednesday here on the first-degree murder charge. He allegedly stabbed Francisco Losoya at a home on Nicho Esparza Road in El Ranchito about 8 p.m. Tuesday in what investigators are calling a "crime of passion."
Losoya died en route to the hospital, Sheriff Omar Lucio has said.
