It’s a policy of The Brownsville Herald to not name victims of sexual assault.
On Thursday morning, Ruiz went before a justice of the peace who set her bond at $35,000.
Rancho Viejo police began investigating the case on Aug. 26, when a couple reported that Ruiz, a family friend, had sexually assaulted their son, police said.
The boy was taken to the Cameron County Child Advocacy Center where a forensic interview determined that the boy had engaged in sexual intercourse with Ruiz, records show.
During the investigation, police seized telephone text messages in which Ruiz tells a friend that she may have gotten pregnant as a result of the sexual encounter, records reflect.
The boy’s father is listed as a material witness, according to records, after having overheard a conversation between his daughter and Ruiz when the two speak about the encounter.
