Consulate warns do not use highways to Monterrey
If you need to travel to Monterrey, the American Consulate in that city is advising all U.S. citizens to not drive to the region.
On Friday, the U.S. Consulate in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, issued a warden message, urging Americans not to use the major highway between Reynosa and Monterrey or the highway between Nuevo Laredo and Monterrey.
There are reports of drug cartels setting up bogus checkpoints on the highways and an increase in carjackings, including one attack involving a U.S. citizen who was driving on the toll highway to Reynosa.
In this newest travel warning, the consulate indicates there have been numerous confirmed reports of deadly gun battles along the border as well as small towns throughout Nuevo Leon.
The consulate is also limiting travel to Monterrey and its surrounding communities for all U.S. government employees.
Within the Monterrey area, the consulate says there have been grenade attacks on the police headquarters in San Nicolas, Apodaca, Guadalupe, Cadereyta, Escobedo, Allende and Santiago.
