Border Patrol: Agents bombarded with objects fire shots into Mexico

NEAR MADERO — U.S. Border Patrol agents fired gunshots into Mexico upon "being bombarded with objects" during a boat patrol of the Rio Grande, authorities said.

Border Patrol agents were patrolling the Rio Grande near the Chimney Park RV Resort near Madero about 8 a.m. Monday when an undisclosed number of people began throwing objects at the boat, local agency spokesman Agent Joe Treviño said.

"They were being bombarded with objects," he said of the agents.

Agents responded by firing gunshots at the people on the south side of the river, Treviño said.

Authorities refused to disclose how many agents were involved, how many people were throwing objects at the agents and what types of objects were being thrown.

"All that remains under investigation," Treviño said.

No injuries were reported. Treviño said it is Border Patrol's policy to not fire warning shots when agents fear for their safety.

"We do not fire warning shots," he said. "We shoot because we fear for our safety and we're trying to remove the threat."
